October Hatch-A-Long

Thanks! I had a barred rock in April that turned out to be male. He was bigger from the start. Bigger feet, bigger comb, etc. He matured faster than the others. Plus I checked their vents and I guessed right with the 2 I suspected were roos.

Thanks,I will attempt vent sexing and see If I can do it. I thought the males would have lighter color legs with this mix but they all have dark legs but most have 1 toe on each foot that is light. I think the chicks think its a worm because they keep biting each others pink toes. It's like the color difference attracts them. Too funny!

I took the first 12 out because they were climbing all over the one that had partly zipped. It's still trying...

Good luck on your hatch!!!

I understand the importance of leaving the incubator closed but I did and still ended up with one wrapped up in the membrane.
the one that piped wrong figured it out on her own. It was hard to watch but I made it without interfering and so did she.

Notice I call them all she, keep sending that vibe and maybe it will be true.
They are all "she's" until they prove otherwise... I have a few that are 12 weeks don't have saddle or pin feathers yet but haven't crowed so they are still she's lol

One has been trying to hatch since last night. Is it ever an OK thing to help them out?
There are great threads on assited hatching but I'd wait at least 24 hours before you even think about it. I've found If they can hatch on their own it's best to let them do it... even if they are making you have a panic attack!

From my experience if the membrane is really white looking, like its dry, you might want to help. Without fail if I opened my bator at all with any pips they needed help. I guess it just depends on how much the chick is unzipped but if the membrane is stuck to chick its like glue :) Good luck!! I hope it makes it out :)

Thanks so much for all of the advice! I cracked open the incubator, brought the egg below the vent, and was able to drip water on to the zip. I'm happy to say that #13 is hatched and flopping around the incubator!
