October Hatch-A-Long

Here are my new babies. I did really well keeping the incubator closed. I did open last knight after 5th chick hatched to put dry chicks in the brooder. The egg I could not see a pip in had actually piped under the egg where I could not see. The membrane was very thick and stuck to the chick after watching for some time I noticed the membrane turning brown and I did assist just enough to make sure the membrane did not have the chick tied down. When I returned her to the incubator I told myself if she can't make it now then she is not viable anyway. I went to bed and this morning chick #6 was drying. One of her feet the toes curl a little, I'm sure its from being stuck so long. I will make a shoe this morning and hopefully correct it.

I have learned a lot this time around. You can't beat dry hatching. It's best not to use eggs that are round with thick shells and membranes. Most of all KEEP THE INCUBATOR CLOSED unless absolutely necessary. Approx. 40hrs from first pip to completed hatch, Six out of six.

I almost forgot, I'm sure these come from my BR not the Bo. Silver EE over BR, I will get better pics. later and maybe someone can tell me how to sex these chicks.
Cute chicks! Congrats on a successful hatch! They look a lot like mine! I would like to compare a photo of your EE with mine. She's brown/gray and has a black head. She looks like she is part Blue Andalusian. Lays a pink/white egg. Also if you post some picts next week, when they have wing feathers, I might be able to help you decide on the sex.

This is Jewell. We were told she was an Americauna/Easter Egger. But she doesn't lay green/blue eggs.

Well, here is what I get for being patient!! My tiniest Serama egg pipped underneath on the spot it was resting and I had no idea. I didn't dry incubate this time mostly because of this one egg so there was some fluid and by the time I found it, it looked dead. BUT, I was in denial, it can't be gone already!! I started to open the shell a tiny bit and it still seemed really dead, no movement, nothing. I open the shell a little more cause I am thinking I can see what cute Serama I missed out on and it moved a tiny bit!! I hope it makes it, it is very very weak but I turned off the fan so it won't dry up. I have another pip too and my silkie eggs are rocking!

So...

I really hope this baby makes it, partly because there are only 4 and partly because it sucks if the first pip dies before everyone else has even started. Send my baby some love... it could make it! Of course I am afraid to go to bed now but hopefully there will be chicks in the morning!

Thanks! This is double stuff. He is the Dad to the chicks, Mom is a barred rock. I hope he has 2 copies of the blue egg gene, if so all babies will get 1 copy.

This is Ginger. She is not related to the babies but I set 6 of her pretty blue/green eggs last night. I can't get a good pic of her she is flighty( or maybe that's me. lol). They both have Full beards, slate legs she has a beautiful pattern on her back that I can't get to show up in pics.

I will post chick picks on EE braggers thread as soon as they start to feather.
