So I should cover up the holes? I'm confused, it doesn't take much

I have never used my incubator without them and when one fell out and I didn't realize it the heat and humidity decreased. Try it both ways and see what happens...my experience may not be the same as yours.

My environment is very dry and I run my a/c.

I left my plugs in after a hatch started and my first 4 to hatch died from I believe was suffocation. after I realized it had happened I removed the plugs and only the ones that had already hatched and the ones that started pipping died all the rest that started later lived. You can probably leave them in when you need them before the hatch but I suggest removing any venting hole plugs once they start pipping.... Unless removing them causes rapid loss of humidity. I know if I lived in an arid climate I would keep them in until the hatch started but I live in a humid environment... even today on our tenth week in a row with no rain we have a high humidity.

I take my red plugs out at Day 10 (Sally Sunshine's recommendation) and keep humidity up by running tubing through the side channel where the turner power cord comes out, down into the water wells. Then I can inject water through the tube when it's needed without opening the incubator.

I use a Humidikit, same basic idea.
