Chicks are 2.5 weeks old, momma is doing great with them. They are really starting the feather out beyond their wings. Going to get down into the 20s this weekend so adding some more line shavings to the coop but they should be fine.

Wanted to switch to heated dog bowls but thinking 3 weeks still might be too young (fear if drowning)? Thoughts anyone?

I'd be hesitant to go to open bowl.

That is what I was thinking too....I will be looking for rocks today I mean I can keep the normal waterers out for a couple more weeks and break up the ice as needed, it is just more work than I wanted, lol

Yeah yours are bout 10 days ahead of mine. Cold front is coming this weekend so we'll see. I gotta get the windbreaker up!
I remember last winter you had given me the idea to put stuff everywhere in the run so they could get protection. But now my run is smaller since that first one collapsed on me so less room in the run.

I was all set to leave them in the brooder for another week, but I took advantage of the opportunity.

I don't remember who taught me to feed integrating birds at the fenceline so that they learn to eat together as a flock, but I have done served all treat foods at the boundaries every time.

My chicks are growing well, though I do seem to have quite a few boys.
This barred chick appears female so far though, and is peacombed(heterozygous for it) so i’m hoping that means it also got the gene for colored eggs. The chick beside it is looking fairly male though, and the comb of the one behind it is also fairly pinkish already.

Chick on the left is 5 days older, but so much less feathered. Poor little fellow is getting outgrown by the october 15th chicks.

We're getting HEAVY rain from the remnants of Nicole so even though I'm not feeling well and had another hard day at work I went out between rainstorms to check on the babies.

Their integration pen is perfectly dry.

They were, however, sleeping in the breeziest corner -- just enough air wafting around to flutter the hem of my skirt a little. They're probably fine, but I did lean a piece of random scrap wood against the wire there for a little additional protection.

Yesterday, my Silkie passed away. I cannot get any new pictures of her now. I thought she would get well, but now I know she's not in pain anymore.

Her name was Q-Tip (her fluff reminded us of the fluff part of a q-tip.) She had gotten attacked by an opossum, and it must have punctured her ear because it became infected. We did all we could to make her better.

Rest In Peace, Q-Tip.
