Bad news and good news, yesterday. 3 of the 4 Buckeye chicks that hatched did not make it. Just one little fuzz butt, all glued up like one of the FBCMs had been in the other 'bator.
So I washed it under really warm water, towel dried it, and put it back into the 'bator to fluff up. This morning I put it with the 10 other chicks. The formerly gucky FBCM chick has asserted itself in the brooder "flock" and although it IS smaller than the others, it pushes itself to the feeder and waterer just fine.
As I checked on the Buckeye chick throughout the day, I've seen it assert itself, too. One little nearly orange chick in amongst the dark FBCM and very light Salmon Faverolles, scooting around without any trouble. It does spend more time directly under the heat lamp than the others.
As I was cleaning up the 3 Brinsea MiniAdvance/EX 'bators, I suddenly realized I was hearing a peep - and tomorrow's scheduled hatch has already begun: there's a brand new hatchling!
Newyorkrita, I don't actually have the space. Well, I do until they all grow up.
I just cannot help it. I am planning on offering chicks to local BYCers as long as I am able to keep at least one of each breed I manage to hatch. I don't mind raising them until they're 8 to 12 weeks old.
