October Hatching ... How many are in? I'm due to hatch on 10/17

Bad news and good news, yesterday. 3 of the 4 Buckeye chicks that hatched did not make it. Just one little fuzz butt, all glued up like one of the FBCMs had been in the other 'bator.

So I washed it under really warm water, towel dried it, and put it back into the 'bator to fluff up. This morning I put it with the 10 other chicks. The formerly gucky FBCM chick has asserted itself in the brooder "flock" and although it IS smaller than the others, it pushes itself to the feeder and waterer just fine.

As I checked on the Buckeye chick throughout the day, I've seen it assert itself, too. One little nearly orange chick in amongst the dark FBCM and very light Salmon Faverolles, scooting around without any trouble. It does spend more time directly under the heat lamp than the others.

As I was cleaning up the 3 Brinsea MiniAdvance/EX 'bators, I suddenly realized I was hearing a peep - and tomorrow's scheduled hatch has already begun: there's a brand new hatchling!

Newyorkrita, I don't actually have the space. Well, I do until they all grow up.

I just cannot help it. I am planning on offering chicks to local BYCers as long as I am able to keep at least one of each breed I manage to hatch. I don't mind raising them until they're 8 to 12 weeks old.

No luck so far. One dead this morning, the second one out was cheeping away for ages, but then went quiet. I think Fraggle stood on it.

To intervene or not to intervene, that is the question. Whether 'tis nobler to help the hatchlings with a couple of days under a heatlamp or allow the broody hen to do as nature intended, and thus, end it.

I'm using 3 bators and they are driving me insane. My 2 LG's have been dropping temps at night so I have been covering them with a towel and that makes the humidity rise higher than I care for. Then yesterday my hatcher a Hovobator went nuts and the temp spiked to 104 and i've been playing Hatie's trying to get it stable. I ended up taking eggs out of one of ther LG's and going ahead and puting those eggs in lock down and transferring some to the other LG so hopefully if it's not too late for these eggs, I may get something from them. There are about 50 quail eggs and only 3 chicken eggs but they are green and I really want them to make it.

We have got to get the cabinet built. We need to go to Lowes and buy a sheet of plywood and plexiglas and get busy. It's bery disappointing when all your hard work is lost.

I've been feeling so low after having to bury my first two chicks. Your thread restores my patience and hope.

Is anyone else using a broody hen or are you all using incubators?

My hatches are always late. I am using an incubator...sometimes patience and hope is all we have we have done all we can do..plus prayer...How great for October...the only one to pip so far is the number '13' egg....
Day 22...One BLW hatched so far. no more pips as of now. Lucky #13 I guess!!!!!!!!more later

My incubators have been going crazy with the temperatures and humidity. My Hovobator is usually the only one that is stable and I use it for a hatcher but it went nuts and i'm afraid it cooked the chicks. I put a bunch of quai and a couple chicken eggs in lock down then the temp spiked to 104 and I got it down then it went back up to 102 and it was a battle to keep it down for 2 days I fought with it. Then I had some more quail that where to go oin lock down today so I just took out the turner and put the other eggs in bator 2 but nothing has happened yet. Last time I had to to the switch they started to pop open like mad but not this time. I sure hope I didn't loose them all. I have chicken eggs due to go in lock down this week too. I wish we could hury up and get the cabinet built. We're still working on gathering parts. I just ordered the fans last night and still need to order a thermostat. I don't want to use any parts off my styrofoam bators because DH plans to give his brother what he needs to start raising quail.

I've got hmm.. about 30 in the incubator, all due to hatch in one week. So far, so good! I really shouldn't hatch anything, but these are all bantam so maybe I can find room. I've got mostly MF d'uccle and barnyard mix eggs plus a few favorelles.

My last LF hatch turned out to be almost all roo!! Ack!
