October Hatching ... How many are in? I'm due to hatch on 10/17

Congrats to all of you on your hatches so far.

I will be going into lockdown in 4 days on one of my hatches-so far they are looking good.

hi all havent posted much here lately because nothing much is going on

i go into lockdown tomorrow on 7 olive eggers. then i will still have wheaten marans eggs in the incubator that will be on day 10 i think ( dont have the calender right here) hoping to get some cuddle buddies for my one serama chick that hatched 2 weeks ago. it should be about the size of a newly hatched standard size chick then. good luck to all and myself

I had nine chicken an nine ducks eggs. Placed them in the bator on the 23rd i will be on lock down on the 11th and the 18th.
i candled them this morning and noticed a dead smell I found out that only one chiken egg looks to hatch and five ducks to hatch.

I've never raised quail but have pondered the thought. I hate killing things although I LOVE to eat them. I don't know if I am up to the task of killing ALL THOSE QUAIL. I

It took me an entire day to work up the nerve to process my first quail and now it's a breeze. I couldn't even put a chick out of it's misery when it hatched and ha something wrong with it I couldn't fix. I can do that now too. It's not so bad once you've done your first one. Somebody posted a video of how they process quail here on BYC. It is actually a short video on youtube. I can do one in about 3 minutes.

Once I get enough in my freezer i'm selling the extra's. I have probably got enough now but I have to wait for them to grow up first. I need to get some Bob Whites from somebody for next years layers to mix with mine so I have new blood in the mix.

I was wondering how long it takes for quail to get from hatch to processing age? I am kind of interested in raising them.

These are my chicks that hatched the 3rd and 4th of October. There is one more but it seems to be camera shy. I took 5 pics and it ran out of every one. It is behind the waterer in this one.

Cortunix take 7 to 8 weeks and they lay that soon also. Bob Whites take longer. I have a bunch that are 8 weeks and look to be about half way there. But if your looking for all white meat that would be Texas A & M's. They are kinda small and would take more for a meal but as far as I know they are the only ones that are all white meat.

Well now I have to go and find some quail so I can make sure I like it. I prefer dark meat even though I know white meat is healthier. Last question how much do they eat?

I was late in the September hatchalog but my eggs are really day 21 starting at 7 pm tonight. I was so bummed out and pretty sure I had messed up everything as its my firsat time to hatch. I started with a week of too high humidity at over 85% until I figgured that out. I was incubating in my Genesis 1588. Then I decided to get a Brower Top Hatch for hatching. That was so I could do stagged hatches if I wanted to as I tansfered the eggs before lockdown. Well, this is my first time hatching and I was having major problems figguring out the Brower too. I can get the temps steady on the little thermomiter they send but the temp humidity gauge and the other which is a probe type both always showed a different temp depending on were I placed them in the Brower. I fussed around with it before I moved the eggs in but just left it when I actually moved eggs in at lockdown.

So I have 6 Black Copper Marans (one egg was clear and no development) and 7 olive eggers. I have two BCM already out and two Olive Eggers are started already. I am just so excited. This is my first time and I already know I just want to keep on hatching. In fact I have Lavander Orp eggs set in the Genesis now.

I go into lockdown tomorrow for two incubators, and two days later for another. THIS time I'm gonna candle before lockdown and remove eggs obviously not developing. (I didn't do that with my previous four hatches - too afraid I'd make a mistake and discard a good egg.)

That's how it got me, too - that very first hatch!

I go into lockdown tomorrow for two incubators, and two days later for another. THIS time I'm gonna candle before lockdown and remove eggs obviously not developing. (I didn't do that with my previous four hatches - too afraid I'd make a mistake and discard a good egg.)

I tried candeling on those Olive eggers and BCM but it didn't do me any good. I couldn't see thru the very dark shells, even with my supposed super duper candeler light. But there was one totally clear Marans egg that never developed at all and I could see thru that one. Funny thing was that it was just as dark as the others. So I just put them all in my Broward to hatch (except the clear one) and figgured I would find out sooner or later what was what.
