October Hatching ... How many are in? I'm due to hatch on 10/17

Just set 22 EBay eggs in the bator. Temp was reading 100 and humidity 63%.

So, that puts us on track for Halloween babies but since this is our first ever attempt at hatching, I am NOT counting my chicks until I see fluffy butts. :)

63% Humidity is a little high for the first 18 days of incubation.... from what little I've learned. Between 40-60%.. oh, well, 63 isn't that far above 60. Never mind.

... but... can you get it down a little, anyway? (I just have to meddle, sorry.)

Mine are hatching right now so far we have 6 and one zipping. at least 3 more pipped 11 more to go. Here is a couple of pics

OMG!!! I have quail coming out my earballs or is it eyelobes? See, it's so many I can't keep count. I have 5 hatch dates going on now. Including mySeptember swap eggs just went in lock down. I had some "new blood" eggs that I wanted to keep separate from the rest so I don't get them with my freezer camp quail and they where hatching same time as the freezer camp ones. I had to take out the turner in my chicken bator and let them pop like popcorn in there till the others where done then I transfered them to the hatcher and put my turner back in and added more eggs of mine I want to test for fertility, plus I could use some more EE's and PR's. And my project chickens just started to lay and I want to check those. OMG!.

After I did my chicken math I discovered I have 4 hatch dates that are the same for some ducks, chickens and quail all at once. I have 1 hatcher. I'll have to take the turner out again to keep the quail from getting squashed.I think i'm gonna take a little break next month and let some of these grow up. I have no idea how many I have. I lost count. I have some Bob Whites that will be 8 weeks old we just moved to a cage and out of the grower to make room for more. I have i'm guessing maybe 40+ cortunix in one side of the grower pen and going to put about 25 in the other side tomorrow to make room in my brooders. I have chicks in the hatcher now that I have no brooder for.

So I have to put some outside sooner than I care to. I still have to keep the "new blood" chicks separate during all this for the winter. They will go in pens we have ready in the shed already when they get their feathers. But till then I have to keep them in a draft free pen. DH may have to get busy and build another grow pen. I also have chicken chicks that will go in the outside pens with a heat light at night soon. They are in the big brooder right now and are past due to be out of it. I will have to take a break from hatching quail till I can process some. I figured I need 240 for the winter to have them twice a week for 20 weeks. All I have in the incubators are due this month. I have no hatch dates past the 30th. Thank Goodness. I think I'll wait a few weeks before I add anymore quail. I need to rehome some eggs in the meantime.

I'll get pics of the new ones when they finish hatching.

I have some pics of a few quail babies that hatched this month so far and still are.
These are going out tomorrow in the grow pen. I just cleaned their brooder. They sure are messy little buggars. I clean the brooders 3 x a day

Some of these you can tell are older and they actually hatched with the ones in the pic above. I want to keep all the A & M's together. I do have more but they are older and the today's hatch would get trampled.

As you can see, they have been in this brooder a few hours.
And here are what hatched with in the past hour. When I take the older ones outside, these will go in that brooder as I hav ran out of room.

This how I keep up with what goes in lock down. I go by the number rack. What's in that rack and the lock down date. Like this: 1 BW 10/17
They go in the hatcher and I put the tab on the hatcher like it is on the bators. I have 2 bators and 1 hatcher. I need 3 bators and 2 hatchers.

Every year this addiction gets worse. I wonder if there is a class CHA, Chickenholick Anonomous. I sure need to attend.

Emvickery, you sound kind of like me, lol. I've gone quail crazy. I just put 30 of my 3-week old quail in a grower cage, and I have 81 more eggs in the bator due to hatch on the 18th. We have processed two batches so far. I ate some for the first time last week, and OMG.....that's some delicious eating, let me tell you. With 3 adults (2 being men) and 3 teen-agers, I cooked 20. The kids wouldn't eat it, I guess cuz they watched them hatch and then grow up. Anyway, we still had only 8 of those 20 left for lunch the next day. Gonna have to hatch lots lots more of those. I pickle what eggs I don't incubate....lovely on a salad. Quail get a bit expensive to raise, but they are worth every penny.

Oh, btw, that pick of them in the bator looks just like mine at hatch-time, lol. Those mats work perfect, don't they? Just take em out and throw in the washer, and re-use. Gotta love that.

I never pickled any eggs. When they get 5 days old and nobody has claimed them I toss them to the chickens. I just finished moving the quail around and put the week olds outside in the grower pen. I have to stop because i'm getting injured birds from over crowding. I culled 1 today and found 1 dead with about 5 more injured from pecking. ONe got a bum leg so it's in the "hospital" cage in the house to see if it will mend. I have to put the "chicken" chicks out today too. They are smelling up the nursery. That will leave me with an empty brooder. Oh! What will I do.

I have 3 swap eggs to hatch tomorrow along with one of my Production red eggs and there are still quail in the bator hatching. I took some pics after I got them all cleaned up and the new babies out of the bator. One of the bigger ones shimmied up in the toilet paper roll and it's legs where sticking out. I thought it was pretty comical looking and then some of the new babies fell asleep piled up in the food bowl.
