The rehab I took Frightful to is just for carnivorous birds. they do keep the birds that are unreleasable, or find them a home where they can be 'education' birds. But there's a nearby park called Ijams that keeps all small wild mammals that can't be released, and uses them for education animals. The tamer ones come out like at the zoo, the wilder ones have little sanctuary-style abodes where it's like their natural home and they can hide if they want.
Yes, having Frightful stick around has been lovely. Knowing she's okay is comforting. I had hoped we'd see juvies this past summer, but we didn't. Makes sense, since the bird she kung-fooed out of the tree is still around. It's the one that tried to get my birds one afternoon.
Frightful is the reason I put my culled birds in the freezer for the rehab center. I'm taking them a batch later this month!
