No, I don't need him. He was supposed to be a pullet, came out of the pullet bin with my sweet BO Sunflower, but he's a dud.

He's gorgeous, but pretty is as pretty does.

He's...let's see...a little over 5 months old, so hopefully not too tough yet. But I've been wanting to make some good stock anyway.

New birds are on their way home with DH, so it is quiet behind my desk. I'm glad I work at a family-owned place because they elicited curiosity and not complaint.
And the lady who hauled them for me wants to get some info on peacocks at some point. I told her what I didn't know I could find out LOL.

So now I'm having some fritos and bean dip for lunch while my trainees watch tedious videos. I'll bet they've never worked anywhere that they had roosters crowing to keep them awake during the OSHA training videos

The girl hatched around.....March 18...give or take a few days. So the eggs were probably from the week before or of the JG roo being pulled out. He nearly killed my RIR roo that same week, so he probably was the dominant rooster breeding most of the girls too.

I use my white leghorn eggs as "test" eggs in each bator hatch. they are HUGE and easy to candle and the white leghorn girls are popular with the boys so they are nearly always fertile. I compare the candling veining and movement in "easy" leghorn egg to the dark hard to candle eggs (what can I say, I'm a genius).

Part of the reason why I wondered if she had a different dad is that she is WAY bigger than her sisters. And my RIR rooster was huge. But maybe it is just because of the "bigger" eggs and mature age of both. Who knows. I did hatch out a white chick with red leakage which was sure was a white leghorn/rir but it was a boy. So who knows.

Speaking of which; when is the next 'local' sale around here? Some of these newbies will have to go. I am kinda disappointed now that I've had a little time to look them over better. Dude did NOT know how to breed! Boooooo. My inbred birds are prettier!
I am going to think this out and come up with a plan. But the poorest birds need to be sold fairly soon. I don't want to waste space on them. And I certainly don't want to take them to OH!!!!

Yep. Last sale I sold a whopping NOTHING and gave away a rooster. That was it. I showed up late and was way at the end and had no luck. I even brought 17 darn birds. This time I think I am going to bring less and go there earlier. Definitely not bringing my buff columbian pair anymore. Or my partridge cross girl. Halfway tempted to bring a pen of roosters with a free sign on it. Sigh.

I LMAO at Big Bang Theory last week. There ws a sign that said "Cats: $20" and they had a long line. Then it turned out they were giving away $20 to each person that took a cat.

My only consolation selling birds there is that they will be resold and hopefully find a nice home. I would not sell my "pet birds" there.....I bring birds I am not overly attached to.

I have yet to bring any large fowl. Don't know that I plan on it.

I gave a kid a rooster last week. Cute little mottled/mille looking cochin rooster. Black with some mottling/lacing. Then the kids dad wanted to buy a hen to go with it. For less than the pair price. Dude, the whole point of me giving your kid the rooster is that I have no hen to go with him. Now you want me to break up one of my pairs and sell you the hen for cheap since she is a "single" and not a pair?

The guy went home hen-less.

I did bring a pair I regretted immediately. Everybody liked them the best. I priced them double the other pairs and as expected, did not sell them. Cetawin actually wants them eventually, I think. Gorgeous buff columbian/mille bantam cochin pairs. The hen went broody a few days after I got her home.

Yes, that is definitely the resell capital of chicken sales.

I plan to go over my new birds closely this afternoon. Maybe start some trimming as a I analyze foot feathers. Keepers in one pen, sale birds in another. Still can't put them on dirt anyway, and having less birds to transition would be better for me.

Today I will plot and plan my breeding goals as well, so that I don't sell someone that I might need. I had planned to sell my young millie trio that I had planned to use as breeding birds. Then I realized that compared to the current birds I should KEEP the young pullets and move older birds.
Some are pets and will never leave my house. Like TN, my adorable rooster who needs to retire. He will start tending the teenagers. I think he will be good at that.
But some are just birds, and those I can rehome.

But the nice ones, that I will NOT give away, are going to OH with me. I'm definitely selling the goldneck trio that won at the last show. The roo is a high energy antsy boy and he drives me nuts. I am soooo into mellow birds!
