Yes painful. Wegot has a point about bum wrists. I have troubles with mine too sometimes so I know that it can get in the way of pushups and some dumbbell moves.
To be able to still work the pushup muscles, I stand in front of a upholstered chair, put my hands on each chair arm and do straight-body pushups that way. That way the hand is curving around a soft surface, rather than smack straight on the floor at an awkward angle. It's not a real pushup, but I bet doing a bunch of those will certainly assist in increasing the number of real pushups when your wrists feel better.
[why am I being so serious??? I'm boring myself!]
I wonder if doing them on your fists (with your fists on something cushy) would help the wrist issue? Must experiment. Although my wrists are about the only thing that don't bother me at one time or another.
