Yes. Fruit only lay eggs from aug to oct and jun every other year.

So by planting the genetic 'fails' under our oak saplings, we might really get egg-corns when the trees mature?

egg-zactly.

Fencing isn't as much of an issue actually. I 'm wondering the cost vs benefit of a large number of emus. or would it be emi?

Mob. Always go back to the mob.

I think emu should be approached step by step. Get a small mob of emu, a trio perhaps, and see how they do. Then, if emu are a good thing you get more. If emu are stressful, but good guardians for the chickens and horses, you are good to go. And if emu are bad bad bad, then you only have 3 to find a processor for....

again, I'm going hmmmmmmmm. I doubt there is any place around here to "process" emus. I'm wondering though if having a pair to sell the pretty eggs wouldn't be kind of fun. Too many decisions.

I am not competent enough to make these executive type decisions. I waffle too much. I guess I didn't realize people had them as a business like cattle or sheep. There was a place near where we lived in NC that had Emus in a pen behind their house. They sold tickets and you could "pet" them. I know it wasn't a very big are they were housed in. But the fencing was pretty tall.

I must contemplate. How much time do we have until emu hatching?

And is the person in AK, wrong, AR asking 35 a bird? Is that the going rate?

In CA Kelsey said they go for $50 a chick.

I'll bet you could make decent $ on the eggs, but it would take a while for them to be old enough. And good fencing would be an issue.
Easter is Esmerelda's 'due by' date. Eduardo just started 'cooking' so 47-54 days until we know anything from him.

The petting zoo at the fair last Septemeber had some voracious emu 'teenagers' you could pet/feed if you dared. I dared.
They scared the wee out of quite a few folk. I can soooo see the emu being respectful towards you though.

I read it takes three years for them to start laying.

YOu and I share a brian. you know that? I don't know if brian nows, but we do. I was pondering the same thing.

Algae, I think I saw in the few snippets I read it takes 18 months.

Or have a coop builder like DH who builds the coop 3x the size requested.

Don't tell DH we share a brian, okay?

I am a Tuarus. I step gingerly out toward new things, then when I think I have a handle on how things work, I go overboard.
My way would be 3 the first year, 9 more the second year, 30 more the third year.... And then I'd have 100 emu and be Beaner (

I just gave a copy to Biker-lady and Sergeant Fenster, You should be hearing the gales of laughter very soon.

This is no joke, this is really what it's like here. And I'm insanely honest, so dorkboy, doey-eyed girl, yo-yo man and evil wench all know what I think of them. As a matter of fact it's documented with the union too.

Sergeant Fenster is laughing out loud and says I nailed it! She would love to share it but realizes that would be a bad idea. Biker-lady walked into my area, I have a 40' counter - it's more of a space than an office, anyway, all she could do is stand in the doorway, bright red and smile. Another co-worker (not part of the story) walked in, looked at her and asked "Are you causing trouble again?" All Biker-lady could do is grin and point at me. Then she shook her head and walked away. I think she's afraid to open her mouth.
