TODAY IS THE DAY TO SET QUAIL!!!!!!!!!!!

I’m so excited. I just got a new brooder made, and I found feed at the feed store.

Is anyone sneaking in a day 3 candle of their chicken eggs or is everyone waiting til day 4 or later?

Got a wild hair and candled three of the chicken eggs. Two had signs of veins. One looked like it quit. Still too early to know for absolute sure that it quit. All 5 duck eggs are going strong so far 😊

On a sad note, my Swedish Flower pullet was almost killed by a hawk. Her nostrils were almost torn off, small piece of her head torn. Thank goodness we have emus! They heard the commotion and stopped her from being eaten.

Shes the one in the video called Flower Duck.

I rarely candle and with very dark eggs, it would be an exercise in futility to candle so early. It would be extremely difficult to even see an air cell let alone any hint of development.
I may look at candling differently if the majority of my eggs were white.
So as a matter of practice, I don't rely on candling until well after the second week and usually only candle once or at most twice.
For determining air cell drawdown, I rely on weight loss.

If I’m doing shipped eggs, I candle at 4 and 6 days to catch early quitters so the bacteria doesn’t grow. Then I don’t candle often again until before lockdown. dark eggs I also rarely candle. I candle around day 12 to see if you can see the shadow break of a developing egg clearly and that’s about it

I will probably candle quail eggs a lot more because I’ve never had them before.

BUT, I cannot keep my hands OFF of duck eggs. They’re so transparent and AMAZING!!!
