I've only ever been to a fair once, but when I did I had an amazing time. There they had a yard with chickens and a bunny. The chickens you were allowed to hold as long as you weren't stressing them out. They were all barred plymouth rocks, except for one golden chicken which caught my eye. Something about it was so stunning to me (if I saw now-a-days I would vomit in my mouth.) I gently picked it up and that was the first chicken I ever held. It was a buff Orpington. After that I had dreams of one day owning my own chickens and having a "golden" chicken just like it and naming it McNugget. Well come this day, I haven't owned one, and don't want to own one. Ever. I've grown a passionate dislike for the hatchery stock breed and the color buff no longer looks golden, but like a milky vomit. However, that was the first time I ever held, or touched a chicken.

The last time I went to the fair I was 4-5 months pregnant. I only wanted to do the easy rides like the Ferris wheel, spinning cups, and maybe just some games I knew I would never win. However, my husband, somehow coaxed me into going on that ride that rocks back and forth then ultimately you go upside down in a verticals circle. I felt so sick after this ride I have no idea how he was able to get me into going on the ride that just goes up and down in a circle but nothing upside down. I was so nauseous but it didn’t end there. We also went on the ride that always crushes whoever sits on the outside. He was crushed by force of the ride going in a horizontal circle. We finally rode the Ferris Wheel and he constantly tried to get me on more rides but at that point my vertigo was so bad I thought I couldn’t walk out of the park. At my point in pregnancy, nothing I rode on was considered dangerous or hazardous to the health of my child. I was the only one who suffered. She’s healthy and as smart as can be!

Last time I went to the fair would’ve been 9-10 years ago
Going was so magical. We took a train there. When we arrived there were so many things to do, I was ecstatic. They had a shed with animals, and a patting zoo. I remember that as the sun went down I watched the lights for each of the rides turn on. It was beautiful. We rode the Ferris Wheel at the end of the night, and as it got higher and higher the more and more magical it looked. It was incredibly beautiful, it was like nothing I had ever seen before. I’m not sure if I’d find it as incredible and magical now, but at the time it was like something out of a futuristic movie.
After the Ferris Wheel we went and got
Jam-donuts, then we rode the train back to our car. This is one of my favourite memories. Even though this memory may not be as beautiful as it was at the time, I still love it.

My favorite fair memories were from 4h and FFA. When I was a young teen I showed a lamb in the county and state fair. My FFA teacher was a good family friend and had an extra lamb, so he let me show it. I was in Heaven. We had the acreage to raise livestock but not the money. So this was an amazing gift. I got a few ribbons, but I’m not sure if or how I placed. Another year I showed a pig and I didn’t enjoy it nearly as much. Lambs were definitely my favorite, and I am so thankful for the kindness my teacher showed me. I’d say he and his wife were an amazing influence for me. I felt important and noticed. Which is a big deal for a quiet, mostly invisible girl.

What a wonderful memory to have...and a wonderful FFA teacher and friend!

It’s been a few years since I went to the fair, but I remember last time walking through the room of chickens. They were all in cages, (being showed) but they were so beautiful. That was the first time I ever realized how many chicken breeds there were. I remember being in awe of how big they could be, or how small. From the tiniest Serama to the largest Brahma. It was incredible! I can’t believe I didn’t know the different breeds at the time, the only way I knew was by looking at the sign on the cage. And what a rainbow of colors! Red, orange, and yellow. White, black, brown, and grey.
Different feather patterns as well, laced, double laced, barred, silkied (I loved those Silkies!) pencilled, partridge... so many. That’s when I fell in love with chickens. I’ve learned so much, however, since coming to BYC. At that time, I might not have been able to tell a rooster from hen! I loved seeing all the chickens so much that I’m considering showing a few of my girls this year.
