Here is our Gourd - Shade solution for the chicken run. There are a few kinds of gourds here, but the most shade producing and vigorous gourd is the "Birdhouse Gourd" seed from Burpee seeds. This is the south (and east) side fo the run, so it is HOT in the summer.

Late fall only the birdhouse gourds remain green. We do not have a long enough season for them to dry on the vine, but we brought them into the barn, and they dried out over the winter.

I like your gourd shade for the run!

MELONS!! We were successful in growing melons and they were tasty! What a happy gardening surprise, since we live in OH, not such a long and sometimes not even a hot enough environment. We tried melons in a garden around 100 miles south of here, and they did not grow or produce at all!
