Can someone explain why a bird covered in feathers will stretch out an "sun" themselves its not like they can tan or anything. They often have a harder time shedding heat than collecting it. Seems like a very odd behavior

As I understand it, there are several reasons for chicken sunbathing. In the winter, obviously it allows them to warm as many of their feathers as possible, but that's actually just a secondary benefit. Just as with humans, the sun helps the birds convert sunlight into Vitamin D, and the solarizing also helps to dislodge and kill off parasites that prefer to remain in the shadows. If you watch your birds, you will often see them sun themselves and then upon returning to the shade, they'll begin preening their feathers. It's one of their "bathing" methods, along with dust bathing.

This hen sat for 4 weeks on eggs that did not take until I could get her a few day old babies. She is a great mom to them and they are very lucky hatchery babies to have a mom.


This mom had disappeared for 3 weeks while she sat on her eggs somewhere in the horse pasture. She brought 10 home like nothing ever happened.
