I now collect twice a day had three of these coming every day stealing my eggs!

I understand snakes are good for the ecosystem, but if that happens to me my tolerance level will drop tremendously. Three kinds of snakes I dislike. Live snakes, dead snakes, and those darn sticks that look like snakes...

Of course they have to lay eggs. The hens need to earn their keep besides being lawn ornaments

I got them as an organic pest control to my expanding garden. Also as a great way to teach my kids about responsibility. I'm an avid baker so I'm curious how much better the eggs will taste in my confections.

I count on them for eggs both for eating and breeding. Manure and bug control also. We enjoy their antics and entertainment and just hanging out with them, but at the end of the day, we all have work to do.

Right now I would say their composting abilities are as important to me as laying eggs. But I'm sure that will change as future plans start taking shape.

Our flock is now composed of old ladies going on 13 years old. A couple of the gals are still laying an egg now and then in the spring. One in particular I wish would stop laying, since two years ago she had a bad bout of prolapse and had to go into the vet to get ..ahem..rejuvenation surgery on her cloaca. Twice.

Their friendship is now more important to me than the eggs they once provided.

I don't really care about egg production. My chickens are pets, and breeds that lay a lot generally have shorter life spans, so I actually prefer if they don't lay too many eggs.
