Squizz....I think she does look more like a Barred Rock, but the picture is kind of far away so it's hard to tell. I have Black Copper Marans, but had one Cuckoo Maran that was given to me when I lost some my productive hens. I am not as fond of the coloring on them so I gave her back to the person who gave her to me when I restocked my hens. Marans should have much darker brown eggs than your average hen. This image from the Marans Egg Color Standard Chart. The first egg is the standard white egg. Egg color can vary during the season from the same hen, usually getting somewhat lighter as the season progresses.

Thank you Audio51. Wow, I didn't realise that the eggs would change through the season. That was really helpful, thanks! It's funny isn't it how we take to the hens :) I couldn't find her yesterday as they all free range and thought she'd really got herself lost. Turned out she was sitting on everypne's eggs! She'd make a good mum

+ 24=12,315

1 coco maran
1 blue andelusion
1 black sex link
2 silkies
2 sizzles
and a bunch of beautiful girls! 24 in all.

12,315+20=12,335. 1 self blue oegb roo,1 self blue oegb hen,1 chocolate serama roo,1 serama hen,i oegb hen,1american game hen,3cochin chicks,3 dorking mixes,4american game mixes,3 oegb chicks,1 black jap bantam roo,

12,315+44=12,359 because I added (50-6 lost) 44 Silkies. Oh wait! One hen hatched one baby, 12,360, and one hen hatched 3 babies so that makes 12,364! And I might not have counted my Spitz accidents--+6 so 12,370.

I hope you are enjoying your chickens.  I had never heard of the Daisy Belles before.  I'm going to have to look those up.:0)

Thank you!

I am having great fun, getting chooks is one of the best things I've ever done. The Daisy Belles are great, they were slow to come out of their shells unlike the Orpingtons but now they are real characters and very reliable layers. One of them treats me to an xl size egg every few days.
