Five girls have an eight foot cube. Coop is 3x8 by four feet high (with equal storage below). That's around 4 1/2 feet. The run is 5x8 by eight feet high. That's around eight square feet per girl. They have roughly ten feet of roosts in the run at various heights, so it makes up for some of that. They also can enter the coop all day. So the answer is somewhere between eight and fourteen and a half each. I'm gone ten hours each workday, and we have raccoons and other predators, so they are not allowed out.

Coop 3.2 sf
Run (when I get to it) 8 sf
Free range about 1000 sf

And in SoCal so very very few days they ever stay in the coop

(We have 23 chicks with a mobile coop in progress. Coop will be moved around our property with portable electric fencing so birds can pasture.)
  1. Inside space per chicken: 3 1/2 sq.ft.
  2. Run space per chicken: (no run)
  3. Free-range space per chicken: 75 sq.ft. within 40'x40' fencing

I responded with 11+
Of course I am talking about their running room; they have my entire back yard. I was not sure if you were asking about the coop size or the daytime area.

We have 85ft of floor space in our coop which is like 17sq ft per chicken with 5 chickens. Once out of the coop it is free range baby for our babies, they have plenty of space to roam!

I currently have 12.8 sq ft (doing the conversion from metric) per chicken, including the coop and the covered run. They also get free range of my yard from time to time (the big girl gets to range daily for a few hours, the little girls have only been out once or twice because I worry about them getting lost/eaten by local cats).

Our current setup:

  1. Inside coop space: 5 sq. ft. per chicken
  2. Outside Run space: 14 sq. ft. per chicken
  3. Total space altogether per chicken: 19 sq. ft. per chicken
  4. Occasional Free range space per chicken: *4,000 sq. ft.

*When we finally get the fence up, they will have only 1,000 sq.ft. for free range.

We have 10 standard to larger sized hens.

  • Inside space per chicken ~12 sf/chicken
  • Run space per chicken ~12 sf/chicken
  • Free-range space per chicken ~2000 sf/chicken

I have 12 chickens:
2 square ft per chicken in the coop
5+ square ft per chicken in the run that encloses the coop, which they have free access to at all times (it does not get cold enough here to need to close the pop door at night).
1/2 acre for free range during the day
