If my dogs can't get close to the hawks, what chance have I? They're usually up in the flippin trees. The chickens see them but I don't always. Sometimes the bluejays help keep them away. I'm thinking of feeding the jays to keep them around.

Raccoons are the worst. They will slaughter an entire flock just for the sake of it. At least a fox will just snag one hen and take off with it. I hate raccoons.

I bet a boomerang would freak a hawk out! lol The hawk here at my place was hit by a car a couple months ago. Beautiful animal!

North Scottsdale desert Arizona..we lost one girl to coyote..almost lost our Roo today! Husband startled coyote who dropped our Bob and we went coyote huntin!! Got the guy but he ran off before he could be finished off, but got him! There are two more that hunt with him. Our Bob was injured and we fixed him not too bad wounds lucky Bob! We will work on being more cautious when our girls are out...just forgot today..never turn your back!

We lost over 40 hens (laying) to raccoons in less than a week. We found small holes where they were burrowing under the coop....so, we covered them by nailing some extra fencing (don't know what he used) and that didn't stop them, so we put cement blocks over the area....they just moved them completely out of the way!!

So, I voted for raccoons!

We had the same problem with Raccoons that pretty much destroyed our small flock of Chickens. We finally moved the survivors into cages and set them on our porch at night. We started pouring a small amount of Chicken feed in front of the Chicken house where it was visible from our Kitchen window. We turned on the outside lights which shadowed the Chicken house and waited for the visitors. When the visitor arrived and began his meal I went out the front door with my scoped 22 rifle. I quietly walked around the house till my target was in clear view then fired off a successful round. I am currently making changes in the Chicken house that will make it Varmit proof.
