Official BYC Poll: What do you do with your roosters?

I didn't go to the shows in the spring because of covid. Our first show of the season is next month. I usually take birds to sell at the shows but not sure If I will go. I'm elderly with conditions so I'm being very cautious.

Here in the Netherlands lots of people with beautiful/standard breeds sell through the breed association. Most shows were cancelled. And a lot of the members are elderly. So the association’s (websites) are a good place to get in contact with breeders who have chickens or fertile eggs they want to sell or exchange.

The ones that are less into shows often sell/give away their rooster through a kind of Craig’s list. We call marketplace (see marktplaats.nl if you are curious)

We haven’t had a show since January!! It’s been just awful, there are people I don’t see anywhere but shows!! Our next closest show is January again, And it’s the largest one around so hopefully it won’t be cancelled. Best wishes for your show

I just use roosters to protect the hen flock and make chicks.

About half of the chicks are males. When the boys are fairly young they go into bachelor coops and pens. As long as there are no females they do ok.

My rooster plan is to keep one for breeding purposes and meat birds the rest if more than one rooster. Ten hens need one male. If I have twenty females I will keep two males and eat the third.
