Official BYC Poll: What Do You Use Your Rooster/s For?

I have way more Roos than I ever thought I'd have, 11 of them, & I am attached to them all. They have names, come running if I call them & will die of old age Lol, they're my feathered family. I love how sweet 10 of them are always, the 1 can be sweet as long as he's on my lap being fussed over.
I love how they look out for their girls, calling them over for treats, often not even eating a single mealworm for themselves, that just melts my heart.
I love how they they let me scoop them up and hug them, or sit on my lap for pets.
I love how they call out warnings at the mere sight of a distant fox or hawk.
I love their awesome feathering, colors & proud strutting...yeah they all know how handsome they are.
I love how they pose for photos!
I love their personalities.
I love their crows, they each have a unique sound, most of mine have beautiful, deep mellow crows. Only 1 is a loudmouth...yes, the ornery one, my very 1st Roo, Rocky the Barred Rock, he & I have a funny relationship, if I'm not paying attention, he will try to spur my lower leg, I can catch & scoop him up before he does, but most times I just talk him out of it. He's too old to part with now.

We have the most beautiful and well behaved roosters. Our two boys, Benedict and Beauregard, are so cuddly and friendly! They come running for a good morning stroke and chest scratch! I absolutely love roosters as they have such personalities and the cutest dance for the ladies.

Unfortunatley not every rooster can be a lad for the ladies. We raise excess roosters, firstly for sale/rehome, secondly for the freezer and thirdly (and last option) as food donations to our local bird of prey centres/reptile centres. Always providing the best care and lots of space until their end. We also always end the birds ourselves as they are calmer because of trust and we can ensure the most humane end.

But my absolute favourite thing about roosters is how much they love and protect their girls! They are the unsung heroes of the chicken community!!

Our buff orp senior is a kind bird of 2 winters. The junior buff orp, the same age as our hens, is a bit of a novice when it comes to gently wooing the ladies....

Do you have any other roosters?

We also have a Silkie, Jersey Giant and Pekin roosters. While they are all sweethearts, I have found that our buff orpington roosters are the the kindest and most loving of all of them. To both us and their ladies!

Not for breeding yet, but perhaps in the future. Right now he really has no "use," but that's ok.

Same with mine. We were not planning to get a rooster, but out of the batch of chicks we got one was. I really want to incubate some eggs though!

It's easier to lure them in with bait. I just squat low, make a fist, call them, and pretend I have food. It works pretty well...chickens may be fast, but they are NOT the sharpest knive in the drawer.
