I use pine shavings in all my current coops. In the winter I do the Deep Litter Method. (I checked the boxes in the poll.)

Mine are all in coops right on the ground.. dirt dirt dirt.. they love it.. And I believe they pick up enough bacteria as they eat to keep their immune systems healthy. Baby chicks in the brooder have a sand pan to play in, and they eat it as well to help develop crops. I just go out and find sand that has washed up after it rains.

Semi dirt lover here. I do hay on top of dirt and a lot of it gets pushed aside.
