My kids were really bugging me about getting a dog. My wife has an irrational fear of pooches though. So, I started thinking about alternatives and what I'd be willing to take care of and what could provide the kids with valuable learning experiences. Incidentally, we have a cat that despite is svelte, suave appearance is a complete freeloader. We were battling a infestation of field mice at the time and he was doing absolutely knowing to keep them at bay. Anyway, a friend down the road had a layer flock that the kids admired and so the light went on.

It sounded reasonable enough. I refuse to eat store-bought eggs and have since long before I started raising chickens. The kids could learn about taking care of animals and agriculture and I could use the compost on the garden. It all seemed like the perfect plan. I love the little buggers. They'll clean up just about any scraps and they're hysterical to watch. Heck, if I could teach one to play frisbee or chase rabbits, I'd be all set.

My Great-Grandparents & Grandparents had chickens while I was growing up. I think this has a lot to do with it. I also love taking care of them, laugh at their antics, enjoy selling/giving away the extra eggs...so many reasons!! I started with ducks this year and enjoy them for all the same reasons.

The reason's I gave my husband (hee hee) - bug control, egg sales, fresh eggs for us, organic fertilizer...you know, the 'normal' reasons.

My Mom saw a Polish Sultan on a TV show and thought it was so neat, she talked my Dad into getting baby chicks we could raise for pets, eggs, and the fun of having them around.
They are easier/more interesting than other animals to keep, cheaper than all the animals we have, and just as fun to watch.
We can't free-range them but I'm thinking we need to enlarge their outside run about 6' X 12' more. We will see as they continue to grow (5 wks old now).

I love birdwatching (from the windows, not serious birdwatching): having chickens is like birdwatching, only they don't run away where you can't see them. They even come up to you!!

I have chickens for pets, eggs (if they want to lay, I'll take them gratefully), and company. Also bug control and fertilizer. If they don't lay, I won't hold it against them!

I love to hear and feel them purr.

There's nothing like tucking them in the coops for the night and listening to them purr. And giving them their breakfast while they are huddled around the feeder eating happily.

The real reason:
**The joy of helping and caring for one of God's creations who spreads happiness everywhere.**

Just saw this ...... my "other" is it's my stress reliever---I'm a retired RN but I take care of my 89 yr.old father-in-law who is a real poo. Also, my husbands' health is poor and fragile....so I take care of him alot too.

My silkies are my therapy and stress reliever.
