We raise for meat and eggs.

You know, I never knew of anyone who had chickens for just pet purposes until I got on BYC

But I do treat all mine like pets, they even have names...until D-Day.

Other reasons I have chickens that I didn't know I would have until after I got them:

1. Gives a nice connection to my food source and another reason to be grateful to the animal kingdom and nature for what it provides.

2. Chickens are silly and whimsical and lighten my mood every time I see them or when they give me the gift of an egg.

3. Opportunity to see nature in action; instincts kicking in to gear.

I addition to all the normal things chckens are for, the biggest side benefit are the people I have met regarding chickens. They are the best. We have meet ups and confabs and I have made so many new friends all because of my chickens and BYC.
Chickens are great and the people that own them make them greater!

My 'other' reason is that watching the chooks is relaxing. I can spend an hour easily just watching them and my goose doing their thing. Very therapudic, almost induces a meditative state.

If it weren't for my chickens, I'd never get out of the house.

I've been depressed, have low self-esteem and self-confidence. But my flock get me out of the house several times a day. They've helped me laugh when they dust bathe, when they talk to me, I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have them.

And I must be doing something right because they are all healthy (thanks to everyone on BYC).

BTW - I really like these Polls, they are really interesting!!

Thanks!

I primarily got them for the eggs. I wanted a less expensive, more healthful egg and a fun hobby (I am a city girl with a country spirit I suppose). I also wanted them so that my children could enjoy them and learn about caring for animals (there something special about caring for an animal that gives you back something, other than kisses and cuddles).

Additionally the fertilizer and pest control are wonderful side benefits.

This is kind of an "odd" other reason but here goes. We got chickens because DD liked the neighbor's chickens. It's kind of been a family project for us to interact with her and do things as a family.

Also, I'm a classically trained breeder so I can't resist doing some breeding while I'm at it.

Hi
We got chickens to educate our kids about the circle of life.
So many of their friends don't even know where meat comes from.
