I don't think mine are going to live anywhere near five years. They're starting to show signs of aging already

Henny Penny.....

In the fall of 1990 Dr. Edgar Petty called me to see if I wanted a Buff Orpington hen. All I had at the time was Orpington Bantams, so I said no. He insisted. Said she was special. What could be so special about a hatchery chicken?

Seems in 1978 this lady in Oklahoma City ordered some Buff Orpington chicks from Roper's Stillwater Hatchery in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Then the city passed an ordinance and she had to get rid of her chickens. Well only one was left. She wanted it to live out her life on a farm. Her name was Henny Penny. At that time the hatchery had been closed for about 10 years. I asked how old is this hen? Dr. Petty told me she was 12 years old.

Henny Penny lived the last 6 months of her life scratching in the dirt and relaxing in the shade of our small farm. One warm spring day I found her huddled in a corner, her normal roosting spot. Henny Penny had died in her sleep some 13 Springs since she had hatched. She never gave us a single egg. But the enjoyment of seeing her scratch and cackle was more than enough reward.
