It's a bit more "work" to hatch them, but I'll never buy from a hatchery (unless maybe they are meaties) Look for the thread "How A Chicken Is Born" It's something I found on Youtube. Not to mention, it's so much more personal to hatch. I've gotta say, I'm addicted!

What did your girls think about the whole process? Are they as excited as you?

My daughter, who's 11, had the nurse call me today to see if I'd come pick her up. She said she was sick, but really just wanted to check on the chicks.

They've loved every second! They got to watch several of them hatch and even wanted me to wake them up in the middle of the night if any hatched

My oldest daughters 11 too... if she went to a public school, I imagine she would have done just what you girl did

When do you move your next eggs to the hatcher? I think I'm on day 16, but I can't remember exactly. I have it written down at work, though.

This is one of those things that us addicts love to talk about!

You'll need:

-An incubator
This can be as cheap or fancy as you want. Look at posts from MissPrissy. She has a link to an incubator she built in her sig line! I started with a hovabator genesis w/ an auto turner. Since then I've bought a second hovabator (1602 still air) to use as a hatcher, and an LG with auto turner as a back up. I'll be putting fans in both of the latter ones when I get a chance.

-hatching eggs
These are just fertilized eggs. If you can buy them locally, that would be the best, but if you go to the thread hatching eggs for sale here, you'll always find great people willing to sell you some. You can also buy them on eggbid.com and ebay.com

-good thermometer/hygrometer
You need to keep track of your temps and humidity. You can find these right at Walmart.
