We may have to agree to disagree on this.

We have a fish up here that looks a lot like the one in @Fishychick photo, but not as large.

We mainly catch them through the ice, when fishing for walleye. I have never caught one in open water.

They are ugly disgusting fish. When you pull them out of the hole the first thing they do is wrap around your wrist and arm, like a boa constrictor.

I normally cut my line and throw them out on the ice for the crows to eat.

However, there are many that eat them, I keep thinking I will try one, but I can’t bring myself to clean one and I eat every almost wild animal we have.

There is a town on a lake up here that has a festival to catch them and a contest for fairly large prizes. Mainly, it’s an excuse to party. They have over 10,000 people on the ice for it, with food vendors tents and trucks. It’s a huge deal.

The fish is called “eelpout”, but as I understand it that’s a local name and it is actually Burbot. It’s also called “fresh water cod” ( I suppose by people that want to sully the good name of the Cod family” and “Ling” I think that is Ojibaway name, not sure, I know my Grandpa called them that when not calling them names that would put me in BYC detention again.

Oh wow very interesting looking and that sounds fun!!! Although a lot of people on the ice!! sorry if this is a stupid question, but do your lakes still freeze all the way? I know the Erie one hasn’t been fully freezing lately according to my cousin and uncle and I know our cranberry bogs haven’t frozen solid enough lately but we are also warmer than either of you. We used to skate on it but lately I don’t think it’s safe enough but of course it never got very thick anyway. And people do still go out so maybe it is. Maybe this year will be thicker/more solid since it is colder.

:lau I used to hate them especially raw but now I love them 😂🤣 but only dipped in ranch 😂🤣🙈 well, carrots are good without anything but not broccoli unless it is steamed then it is delicious by itself.
Try taking small broccoli florets and tossing them in a dash of olive oil, a dash of sea salt, and a small handfull of fresh grated parmesan cheese.

Put them on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet and roast at 350-ish until the tips start to brown a bit. Maybe 10-15 minutes depending on size.

Delish!

Raw veggies are my favorite way. And they are better for a person raw.
I like some veggies raw but then others I can’t stand raw and/or my body can’t handle it raw. Lettuce and cauliflower are big culprits for that latter one but yet I can handle broccoli just fine.
