Oh Craigslist, You Amuse Me So!

I wasn't aware they had such short life spans and looked it up on Wikipedia ~

Life span

Opossums, like most marsupials, have unusually short life spans for their size and metabolic rate. The Virginia Opossum has a maximal life span in the wild of only about two years. Even in captivity, opossums live only about four years

That is awesome! I do like my fair share of critters...and would see myself adopting skunks and opossums. This is where I have a problem...don't opossums live for only 2 to 3 years? That would be just sad to have a pet for such a short time. Cripes...even chickens can live for 10 to 15 years!

Hmmm... She got this op in like 2006 and I think she found it another home in 2009 because she got divorced and they had to sell the house and move into apartments. Which of course said NO to the idea of an op. She could only take her dog. So I have no idea how long it would live, or if its still alive.

Though, I'm sure in the wild versus MAN and CAR, they probably only have a life span of 2-3 years max.

Valid point!

Our local zoo gave the kids a petting presentation of opossums. The speaker said that because they have such short life spans, they have such HUGE litters. For some reason the info stayed in my brain.

Hmmmm.

A while ago I posted a link to a Craig's list ad for "Maran chickens that lay chocolate eggs"

I decided against buying a chicken that lays a chocolate egg. I'd get much too fat...... And it would be difficult to bring them inside fast enough in Florida before they melted all over the nest boxes......

Just to say, my friend runs a rehab for opossums that have been hurt and need to heal but can't make it in the wild. She's rehomed them to her own home... and though I was TOTALLY freaked out by it, they were very sweet and pet like the one she raised from a wounded baby. Litter trained and slept in a drawer in her daughter's room. Even had its own toys. They made REALLY amazing pets. BUT UGLY!

Somone here in N.C caught a cross eyed possom. He's goin' to France as a national hero. Dang possom has songs and story books and everything!!! Was tryin to eat the guy's chickens and he's worshiped for it!!!

I just found another one! This guy has what is either a barred rock or a cookoo maran!!
Although $96 bucks isn't bad for that many chickens, I don't know if I have the right mental health certifications to handle a cookoo maran. Probably needs some serious medications....
He does have more of those road island reds people keep advertising, though!
