Oh Craigslist, You Amuse Me So!

Ok I am new here, I read through *two whole pages* And I HAD to look at my craigslist for funny ads... I found THE BEST ONE I HAVE EVER SEEN!

Link Here

I have seen worse conditions for chicks. I also think the price is way to high. Maybe they're selling the cage too. Out of curiosity I wonder if anyone has responded to the ad just to ask.

I'm posting this just as a reminder of how conditions can be when people don't properly clean out their incubators and what they post to websites such as Craigslist. I wanted to puke when I saw this. This is a picture I took off of a Craigslist ad months ago. The seller was advertising that she was hatching and selling the chicks. I contacted the seller and asked her if she ever cleaned the incubator. She said she had but it was a stain that wouldn't come out. I replied back that if it was a stain it is because it hadn't been cleaned. She then took the picture off of the ad but not before I copied it to remind me just how disgusting it was. Buyer beware.

I know people who have been hatching for a lot longer than they have heard the term, that will tell you that "lockdown" is a myth.

I hear the term on here. I grew up on this farm and we incubated eggs way back then. I had never heard the term Lockdown until I joined BYC.

I use the term now to mean the last three days of incubating/hatching. But I do not practice it. If I need to open the incubator I do. I pick out old egg shells every day. I change sponges as need be. A hen gets off the nest, I consider opening the incubator the hen going for water or feed. BUT I am a lot faster than she is.

Even someone with no incubating experience, I know that's not right! How disgusting. I wouldn't touch one of those chicks with a 10 foot pole.

I would not call it a myth, what it is, is a convenient 'mental-minder' a reminder to turn off turners and/or remove eggs from turners to avoid entrapment and if possible increase humidity to avoid any shrink wrapping issues...

A broody bird does nothing different on day 18-21 then they do on day 1-17 when sitting on eggs...

I have never done a lock down and have had no hatch rate issues, and I open my incubators regularly multiple times a day to candle and monitor what eggs have internally and externally pipped, rearrange the eggs into groups I can more easily monitor or to remove hatched chicks to free up space in the incubator... I almost always do staggered hatches as well, with eggs hatching at all different times...

I want to be clear that I'm not defending a dirty incubator, but.... Without actually seeing it in person it's hard to tell if those are or are not truly stains... The higher up stains could lend towards being dirty or they could be rust from the metal grate or humidity build up as well... I grew up in a house with high iron content well water and no water softener, I fondly remember foam coolers (or basically anyting else that was white) getting stained after leaving home made ice cubes to melt in them overnight, and those stains are nearly impossible to remove from foam, our white tub and sink was never white either, unless we washed it down with acid, only to be orange again after the next use... Again not defending a dirty incubator, just pointing out that a picture doesn't always tell the entire story...
