I hear this all of the time too, and a lot of people will refer to all chickens no matter of the age as hens and roosters and often times they may have a few birds. It is nice to talk to people who know the difference between pullets and hens, and cockerels and roosters or cocks.I just discovered this thread and it is hilarious!I know this isn't Craigslist, but the same idea: A couple months ago we went to Family Farm and Home to buy chicks. When we asked the sales person what kind of birds they were, he said they were "straight-run pullets". Uhhgghh!![]()
Both of those are funny!![]()
Last summer I went to a fair & they had some signs with facts posted around the animal areas. One of the signs said that different breeds of chickens lay different colored eggs. It then explained that brown chickens lay brown eggs & white chickens lay white eggs.

I went to a kid in the FFA tent & asked him who had made the signs. He simply rolled his eyes & said "Someone who doesn't know chickens."
Then I got to thinking.... What color egg would my lav orp lay? What about a Barred Rock? Oh so much fun we had with all those possibilities!
Yes, it is very nice to talk to people who know chickens. I've also heard people who think the color of the chicken is what color egg they lay.I hear this all of the time too, and a lot of people will refer to all chickens no matter of the age as hens and roosters and often times they may have a few birds. It is nice to talk to people who know the difference between pullets and hens, and cockerels and roosters or cocks. I don't know where people get these ideas but they do and I think we have heard this before. A friend came to our farm and asked my husband how to tell what color eggs the different chickens would lay and he told him that dark colored chickens lay brown eggs and white chickens lay white eggs. We raise Rhode Island Reds and Rhode Island Whites. I heard our friend tell another person the same story my husband had told him and told him how to really tell what color eggs the different breeds will lay. This is one of the grow-out pens.![]()
If I haven't yet I would like to say. Good luck and have fun...
