Oh Craigslist, You Amuse Me So!

i am not money driven so I feel no need to rip anybody off with expensive eggs that I know in my heart shouldn't cost anything.

then again i was raised on a commercial chicken farm and have watched literally millions of birds come and go and don't put the same value on a bird as most on this site do

There is a lot of money in well known lines of a type of Rooster from the sport we are not supposed to post about on BYC. Some of them go for much more than 100 bucks.

added: go check the rules--since we cannot post about it do not ask here.
Just wondering if I should report, either to craigslist or local authorities, or if it is either simply that they are either rare breeds that people love or that they are priced high just in hopes someone will pay a lot for standard birds.

Report it to Craigs list. They do have rules against selling fighting birds.

There are some pretty crazy ads out. From your post apparently you were raised on something similar to a battery farm, being it was a commercial farm where egg production is the highest concern but not for breeding but for eggs or meat depending on the type of birds and the birds are only kept while their laying ability is at a premium. Most birds aren't kept for a very long time only during their optimal laying period. I suspect that is vastly different than most BYC members. I believe most members have just backyard flocks and most don't want to rip people off either but a lot of people put a lot of time in selective breeding programs to produce the best possible birds, I know I do. I love my birds and I show them at poultry shows which isn't everyone's cup of tea but it is something I enjoy and have met a lot of very wonderful people. I am also trying to protect the lineage of the birds I have chosen to raise. I will admit that some people do go very overboard but I also suspect they haven't really done much research and probably put a much higher value on their birds and eggs that what they should. I have some older birds and they may lay only 2 or 3 eggs a week but they earned their way over the years. Good luck and have fun...

I was raised on a broiler farm, usually kept birds less than 7 weeks

Dont get me wrong I do see the beauty in a properly bred bird ... but they are still nothing more than food to me. most birds on craigslist or byc that are "rare" are not at all rare and dont deserve nearly the price they ask.

besides If we didnt take the time to pick the eggs up they wouldn't be worth anything.

I do agree. Some birds I have seen on especially on CL where the poster asks an exorbitant amount of money for a RARE bird and usually they don't put anything about the bird except it is RARE. I don't think they have a clue of what kind of bird they have and most look to me like mutts. Some may be legit but I think most aren't. I think most of the BYC members are a more knowledgeable as there are so many folks on BYC that ask questions and do some research. Just my opinion. Good luck with your birds and have fun...
