I have food from the Salvation Army and some is prob expired. Text me for a pick up time.

Sorry, but tinned food does have a govt mandated expiration date and it's stamped someplace on every can. That being said, most canned food is indeed quite safe long after the govt mandated expiration date. I do however believe that it loses flavor and nutritional value over time. I have used canned goods years past their expiration date with no ill effects.

Over here, there are expiration dates (eg on milk or other perishables, they can't be sold and shouldn't be used after that date) and "best before" dates. Tins have "best before" dates. What you are saying applies to 'best before" dates over here. Over here, expiration ("use by") dates mean they have to go in the bin after that date. The contents of tins can last a long time if they aren't damaged. As you say, maybe it's different in the US.

I'll use eggs and dairy past the "use by" date, as long as it smells and looks okay..especially cheese, it lasts for a long time past..

But cake mixes and stuff are GROSS if they're used past the exp date. Lol. It's like eating cardboard. :p

Here we don't really have a set system. It's a mess lol

We have best by, use before, best used by, even "enjoy by" or freshest by, etc. It all depends on what the manufacturer wants to do. There's no set rules that i know of except milk and dairy is usually best by.

Use by dates usually means to be safe they should be tossed after that date.
Sell by dates usually mean you have an extra week to use them up.
Though as said canned goods last many years.
I'm sure if your worried about it you could feed much of that expired food to your pets.
They're likely not as picky on freshness tasting.
It's too bad the Salvation army couldn't get that food to the needy before it expired!

A lot of the tinned food from food banks would be out of the 'best before' (or US equivalent) date. It's perfectly all right. Shops can still sell it. Usually they'll put it on sale as out of date, but if they can't sell it because people misunderstand the significance of the date on tins and nobody buys it, the stores would donate it for redistribution. I have tins from prehistory in my cupboard. Unless the can is rusted, or damaged or bulging, the contents will stay good inside for ages and ages. Same with dehydrated food. If it doesn't get damp, you can keep it for years and years (and years). Some food deteriorates over time (like cake mixes), but a lot of tinned food doesn't. A lot of food in our society gets wasted because of the dates and caution about liability if somebody gets sick. Perfectly good food gets dumped. I'm old-fashioned, I hate wasting things. I'm glad I've got my dogs and my chooks so stuff I don't want still gets eaten/used. There's a lot of useful info online about food storage and preservation, I'm often looking things up.

Okay, not chicken related but I just couldn't resist.....spelling errors, all caps, they never once mention the name of the business, and apparently they thought it was good enough to repeat over and over.......
