Dear whitecra,

To: ebay inquiry about Black Silkie Hen
Fr: Tom Whiting, Whiting Farms, Inc.

You are correct; a classic Silkie breed chicken has feet feathers. That is specified in The Standard of Perfection for the Silkie breed, for standard or bantam types. But the Silkies we have here at Whiting Farms, even though they started out as pure bantam Silkies in the mid 1990s, have been crossed with some of our other gene pool lines to bring in different attributes for fly tying feathers. And though they now have the fur-like Silkie feathers, some of them have lost various details of the original breed-such as feathered feet. I also select against feathered feet in that they have some negative aspects in a production situation.

So this mount is referred to as a "Silkie", and has the fuzzy feathers like a Silkie, but it lacks the feathered feet like a Silkie. Nonetheless it is a charming specimen and an excellent mount.

Sincerely, Tom Whiting, Ph.D.

I have always admired people who have the skills to do that kind of work. A couple of years ago they came out with a deer head that actually moved his mouth and head and sang all those sick songs that Billy Bass did. I had one of those hung over the fireplace in the living room. When I wanted to freak the dogs out I would hit the remote control on it and watch them get creeped out and leave the room.

I finally sold it to a friend as a gift for his dad. Now I have a ceramic rooster that has one of those motion detectors in it, and when it senses movement it crows!
