For Valentine's day I was gifted a 2 year old mismatched pair of geese. He's a Chinese and I think she's a Toulouse. She just started laying, the 1st one was not fertile.
He is very imprinted on people... pretty sure he thinks I'm his girlfriend. He is SO noisy! Not a bad goose though, I've not been attacked. She's super cute and pretty calm.
I've offered them all flock, chick starter, bird seed and cracked corn. They seem to favor the cracked corn and would rather have grass. They have a pretty big pen with grass but it hasn't started growing much yet. I've been collecting grass from the thicker new growth starting to come in elsewhere. It only took a couple of days of that for them to start demanding it.
They have a small baby pool, a 4ft.
I was told by the previous owner that if you baby talk to him he won't attack you. So, I goosey-goo at him and he's fine.
He guards her nest when she's on it, he seems to know that she's his real mate. They have the whole floor of the brooder shed. When I need to tend the brooders and she's on the nest, he just watches me go pen to pen. Yesterday we were sorting chicks and he REALLY wanted to help, as in standing right between us, looking up, reaching for the chicks as we handled them... I can't say his intentions were good but he let us do what we were doing with nothing more than a whole lot of interest.
The only time he goes REALLY quiet is when wild geese fly overhead, or he's eating or playing in the pool.
Will he chill out eventually or is this our new normal?
