My ducks have all been brooding since April. I have 4 and at one time all 4 were just sitting on huge empty nests. I knew none were fertile because they hadn't been around the boys. Two got tired and decided this wasn't fun anymore. They came on out to forage during the day then the third one starting drifting in and out. We were picking up eggs every day. My last brooder made a new big best and a friend made one beside her. Every night we let the full time brooder out for a bath in the swimming pool and she likes to hang around while we feed the fish, forage a bit then she's ready to go sit again. Today I let everybody out and her and her friend stayed home. I checked on them, they seemed fine. I pittled around the house for a while and took some things to the porch and my full timer was in the yard, foraging around and squawking her lungs out. Like normal. Then I saw a little piece of yellow fuzz running its little legs off trying to keep up with her. And now we have Sweetie Pie. And where she came from, we don't have a clue. We went into her nest to see if there were others and sadly, deep down under her eggs and straw there was a baby who didn't make it. We searched around and she has 6 more eggs. I don't know if any of them are fertile or not. Don't know how they could be but you could have knocked me off the porch when I saw that little duckling chasing her Momma through the yard.

I'm sure they are all my little girls. I only have 2 drakes and they are huge. I just went down to check on the newbie and she's bonding with Mamma. At first I saw this shape just laying there by the nest and I didn't see her baby. I kept looking and I saw a little eye. Then I saw her baby peep out from behind Momma and the other one raised it's little head. And now there are 2. The only thing I can figure out is she stole some fertile eggs and hid them in her nest.

you have 2 drakes as well? that’s where the ducklings came from lol

I have kept the drakes away from my girls since last winter. I have one boy who is absolutely the worst. He doesn't grab the neck for mating, sometimes he grabs the neck just to be mean. They sta

I know that but they have been separated since Spring. She's had to have stolen one of the others fertile eggs.

But now she is rejecting the second baby. I have put her back in the nest with her and when I go out she's outside the nest. Any idea what I can do to help the baby!

All seems better at least to suit Miss Prissy Pants. I have gone out several times today and checked on the babies. My conclusion from watching her is Momma isn't through hatching. I am expecting another one in the morning. Just watching her behavior. But she's not a Momma. She tolerates the first born but she doesn't like the second born. But she doesn't want either one of them in her face or wanting any of her attention. It is what it is and we will just have to hope for the best.
