Oh no, another chicken.... Black Wound?!

Thank you, me too...

Today the 2nd one out of the two we had at vet yesterday died today as well... no clue that Is 4 birds this week, heavy breathing for days and then dropped dead... they are on Amprolium day 2 today...
I'm sorry for your loss.

Are you supplying any type of heat source?
What do you feed?
Where are they being kept?
If you have any photos you wish to share they may be helpful.

Thanks again! :hit

Yes, I have 2 seperate sections in the coop. Adults birds and 2 1/2 month olds&4 month olds.

Both sections have heatlamps and each of them has an oil heater. (Been doing it like this for 3 years)

I feed chicken scratch, layer feed for adults, and crumble and chicken scratch for the smaller ones.

They are being kept in a dry chicken coop.
I might have photos but not the best, I will have to take some better ones shortly

The adult black hen seems better than last weekend, she was wobbly and i start treating her with coccidiosis medicine right away, she is roosting again since 2 days finally as she has always slept on the floor for past 2 months...

Now in my other section off area where the little ones are I had 3 2 1/2months old die in 3 days, and the first one that died in that section was a 4 month-old rooster.

There is 3 things I am suspecting at this point... not enough air flow and too dusty at times, or/and moldy hay i have from a scammer local rancher, or not treating the little ones with medicated starter feed long enough.

My adults i had 2 die, one was from this spring the other one was 3 years old.
The little ones i had 4 die.

I started feeding all the ones from this year non medicated crumble too soon, as i never seen any symptoms or just simply didn't believe in it. Personally from now on I am going to give new baby chicks/ all new chickens Amprolium right off the bat and be done with it.

Not sure, wife was cleaning the coop yesterday panicking as it was dusty, but i did clean not long ago and even before when i did not clean in a while i never had chickens drop like this before.

In the section where you're 2 1/2mo olds died - are there others still in there that seem o.k.? Also any chance you changed bulbs in that particular heat lamp?
I'm just trying to think of different things - in the past a few people have lost birds because of toxic fumes from bulbs that were Teflon. If it's a bulb you have used before successfully, then rule it out.

Poor ventilation and moldy hay could be a contributor to the respiratory symptoms. I hope the results of your necropsy come back soon.

Never have thought of bulbs! When wife cleaned their area yesterday she busted both heat lamps (clumsy) so i got an old one I had and replaced it, less wattage.
The busted heat bulbs looked weird, glass was in tact tho at the base where they broke they did look fried, brownish.

The chickens seem fine one day, then heavy breathing 2 days then dead. I have 2 more breathing heavy now thst were fine a day ago... i think i am going to take them out right now.

Can't say if that's it or not, but worth a try.
I sure hope it's not a respiratory illness.
Coccidiosis if it's a severe overload, it can cause respiratory distress as well since the chick is just shutting down.

You've not changed your set-up in a long time. Think if you have it "closed up" more than usual? Maybe don't have as much ventilation as previous years?

I might have it closed more than during summer as it has been -8 degree Celsius and i am trying to keep heat in, tho still fresh air can come and go.

The area where the little ones house I built this spring, had chicks in there ever since and never had any deaths until now.

But the 2 adults that died were never in that area, only in the adult section, seemed to have breathing issues as well, tho that coop is open during the day as i free range them.

That should slowly cure tho now with Amprolium unless they are too far gone already?

I was wondering now that i am giving my whole flock Amprolium in water source, will it react negatively to my adult chickens? I did feed those medicated feed for like 4 months when i first got them 3 years ago
