Oh no, another chicken.... Black Wound?!

I might have it closed more than during summer as it has been -8 degree Celsius and i am trying to keep heat in, tho still fresh air can come and go.

The area where the little ones house I built this spring, had chicks in there ever since and never had any deaths until now.

But the 2 adults that died were never in that area, only in the adult section, seemed to have breathing issues as well, tho that coop is open during the day as i free range them.

That should slowly cure tho now with Amprolium unless they are too far gone already?

I was wondering now that i am giving my whole flock Amprolium in water source, will it react negatively to my adult chickens? I did feed those medicated feed for like 4 months when i first got them 3 years ago
The Amprolium acts as a Thiamine blocker and helps to starve out Coccidia so the chicks can build resistance. Hard to know if they are too far gone, but it's worth treating to see if they can fight it. It's possible they may have intestinal damage which might affect them later on.

Amprolium will not hurt the adults - it's mild and there's no egg withdrawal period (in the US). The amount of Amprolium in medicated feed is "tiny" so even if they were still on medicated feed, it would not be a worry.

Okay perfect thank you for clearing that up.

So i brought this girl in the house, she is one of my 4 month olds from the 2nd section as i noticed her being in the corner tonight with heavy breathing...

Just now that i brought her in, I noticed her sneezing 4 times, no clue what is going on.
The wife said she has seen clear fluid come out of her beak today as well.
I hope she lives, either way i am grabing the leaf blower tomorrow and cleanse That section tomorrow completely.
If she stays alive while in our house, it might have been the dust or something toxic, else i think cocco or some sort of nasty virus, tho i would think a virus would show symptoms in my adult birds too.

I hope you see some improvement.
She does have a bit of a sunken eye appearance which sometimes indicates respiratory disease. Hoping your test results come in soon so you can start figuring out what's going on.

Your adults may not exhibit any symptoms, especially if they are carriers or disease - it's possible the chicks were exposed to something the adults have.

Well she is still alive and perky. She does seem to have ruffled up feathers tho.

Not sure what she could have caught from

One of the adults I noticed was sneezing today too...

The blue hen i brought inside is still alive, but breathing heavy, and very ruffled feathers still. She has been on 3 anti biotics and nutri drench without much effects.

One antibiotic for coccidiosis, one for respiratory and one a wide spectrum

I cleaned every corner of my coops and blew all the dust out with a leaf blower. I am starting to think they have a virus...

Amprollium is not an antibiotic, but it mimics thiamine in the coccidia organism to starve it. Stop the NutriDrench while on the amprollium, since it contains thiamine (vitamin B1.) Once amprollium is finished, it is okay to resume the NutriDrench.

I was looking for Vitamin B and did not see any on the label, thiamine would explain why... so I just treated the very sick hens with it.
I have still 2 chicks with very heavy breathing, don't think they will make it much longer.

Still no autopsy results.... rest of the flock seems perky and healthy.
This is irritating now. 6 dead, 2 still heavy breathing, 1 sneezing.

I would call them on Monday to ask about results of testing.

Definitely will do!

I had to put the poor little blue one out :hit:hit:hit... she was breathing heavier and heavier with some gurgling and alot of sneezing this evening. She couldn't stand up or hold her balance anymore so I didn't want her suffering anymore.
This is nasty!

I'm so sorry for your loss, sure hope you find out whats going on soon.

Thank you, yes I hope so too, this has been an awful go!

I remember just before all this happened I had a bale of hay and when opened up it, was full of white, dry mold. I took my hay fork and shook the whole bale out, -it was real dusty and gross. I proceeded filling my coops with it after a coop cleaning, thinking it should be ok... i am starting to think this might have been the issue...

Sad or (maybe) good thing is, I sold 8 little hens a week prior before all my chicks start showing symptoms of respiratory issues.
I contacted the lady and asked 'how her chicks are doing?" and told her the whole issues i am having, she said one of hers died randomly but the rest seems healthy and perky.

So i am thinking she got them out in time, were only one of hers developed symptoms, but mine were in the same moldy hay area for another 2 weeks & therefore many more started having issues.

Also when I cleaned coop/threw moldy hay down, I dusted the coops with Damescious Earth and Pyrethrin Powder as I had a lice problem a little while ago. Who knows...

I just hope I did not sell her a virus, I feel horrible. They were all healthy, until one day one after another start showing symtpoms.

Anyways, I totally cleaned out both coops this weekend and removed all dust with a leaf blower and laid down nice, healthy hay with 0 mold. Also I did not dust down coops anymore with Damescious earth or Pyrethrins as I have had no lice anymore.
