OH No, another disaster!!!!!

Aww, Cyn. You know you are my favorite Aunt!

Dont you mean your favorite young aunt, who doesn't look a day over 30? The one who could probably keep up with you on a mtn hike? The one who can drive a car through a parking lot without driving through the store? The one who is going to send you some nice hatching eggs if you're nice to her?? The one who is too far away to slap you across the back of the head?!

Seriously, my 86 yr old dad is still driving some and doing fine, but he has just told me that he will leave most of the heavy driving to his much younger wife now because he knows he can't see or hear the way he used to and he wants to be responsible.

I work on an Alzheimers unit, and believe me- some of my residents were driving until the day they were admitted!
I recently had a patient who was 90, and if he had just AGREED with his family that he shouldn't drive, he probably could have lived at home for many more years. Most men I know would rather DIE than give up their car keys!
My mom had a heart attack in November, and her doctors don't want her to drive.(She's 71) She informed me last evening that she is ready to drive again. It scares me, but I guess I'll see how it goes! 58 is young in my book. (Of course, my book is a dusty old classic...)

I sure feel really sorry for the "old" guy becasue he will likely be sued out the ying-yang by everyone that even SAW him crash into the store, poor guy, I hate our lawsuit mentality, just hate it worse than anything else. I was driving in one of our poorer counties one time and came up behind a car with 5 neck braces across the back dash, I prayed nothing would happen for me to hit them because they sure were ready and probably had their lawyer on speed dial!!!

I had to double check and make sure you weren't in PA. My grandfather is 88 and refuses to give up driving for any reason--he hides his keys from his kids now, because he knows they'll take them. He lives in a nursing home that provides transportation to doctors' visits and weekend shopping excursions, he doesn't need a car, he is just a jerk. So far he has hit a shopping mall's plate-glass window and my aunt's kitchen, via the garage. He managed to hit the shopping mall because he was trying to drop my grandmother off at the curb, then park further away, and he misjudged the curb.

I've never crashed my car ever (bumping a shopping cart in a parking lot doesn't count), got two speeding tickets in 16 years, and my insurance is, like, $1500/year. His insurance was $200/year before his license got taken away. Go figure.

All right so they added his age finally. I was going by the age he looked to my husband. In my defense one of my friends were in there to, she was in the grocery side, but she went over to see what happend, she called me and told me was very old to. That news paper article kept changing several times. The news last night didnt say anything about his age, they said that he was a "older man". Anyway as the news said last night there was about a dozen people injured, all were stable. But the Young man who was driving was in critical care.

Sorry all I was told differently about ages. Our town had started the senior transportation thing after we had quite a few pedestrians ran over by little bitty old ladies who could barley see over thier steering wheels and couldnt see further than three inches past the hood. I took care of a man last year in the nursing home who was almost totally blind because of his diabetes. He refused to take his meds, he thought that takes thousands of mg. of vitamin C he would be cured. Anyway this old man ( he was pushing 96) went and ran over a guy on a bike, and kept on going until he hit a family of three crossing the street. By this time the police were already trying to tract him down, anyway he kept going on until he ran into a tree. If it werent for him injuring himself pretty bad when he hit the tree, he would have went strait to jail. But he was sent to the nursing home. That man is still in there today,

None of the people were permentally injured, but I found it funny that every time he had a court date that morning his injuries from the tree would come back and it always hurt just as bad if not worse than the day it all began. :aww Any way sorry to all of you that were offended. 50 is not old. And I dont think that all "old people" shouldnt be allowed to drive. I do know a man who is 92 that is veruy healthy and active, and he drives just fine. But it isnt a bad idea to start watching aging people, and make sure that they can see, and hear. As we all get older our reflex time slows down, our eyes dont focus in on things as fast, and a lot of people end up with some hearing loss. If people who have these problems, they dont need to be driving, its not safe for them or anyone. But anyway its not the case here. And sorry again.

Really... OLD people should not drive and there should be some laws. I don't know how to define OLD, but 3 1/2 years ago, a 95 year old man ran into the back of me on a highway and knocked my truck into oncoming traffic where it collided with a 19 year old girl in a small car and she died immediately. The old man couldn't even remember seeing another car on the road that day. It was 7 am on a busy highway! He was charged with involuntary vehicular manslaughter. I was ok after about 6 weeks. In general, I walked away with cuts and bruises (Thank God for seat belts). I feel very fortunate and blessed, but it's a shame that the law allowed a man who couldn't drive anymore and was probably a decent person, to end someone's life near the end of his own. I don't know the answer for this sad situation, but someone should really come up with one.

We snow plow this ladies road (yes road, very rich) I met her one day as we were scoping out the places we needed to work, setting up snow markers etc. She drove up in this huge white convertible. Seemed like a very nice lady. I found out later from DH that this lady is 94 years old.

I would have never guessed, and still driving. She didn't look 94 to me.

Kiddin... But not about the beautiful/wonderful/amazing part.

During my years on the Fire Dept. I picked up more accidents caused by those 17 - 28 than by those over 60. Sometimes you just have to look at experience, mental facilities, physical disabilities, and other factors that come into play. Age is not the biggest cause of accidents, being distracted is, and that knows no age limits.
