Oh no storm coming and eggs in bator

BF just came home with a kereosene heater if all else fails wll set bator close and put hand warmer in, cover with blanket. I've been watching the weather channel all day. boy oh boy can you get hopped up about this storm. They now have their guys in the various different areas being heat the hardest to bring us the late breaking weather news.

I'm starting to get a bit nervous about this ice storm too...I JUST set eggs on Saturday for the first time ever. I've already called my parents who live close to us and they said I can use their generator to keep them going. What a bummer during my first hatch!

We'll see what ACTUALLY happens though! You know how the forecasters are...

My husband is out working on the generator now, making sure it will run...just in case. We are just south of Chicago and in the path for 1 to 3 feet of snow and 60 mile/hr winds. I just hope we don't loose power. I have over 200 eggs in the sportsman incubators and the first batch due to hatch next week.

Eye on the weather channel!

i posted stuff on the other thread...

get a 12V converter and run it off your car battery, or off the car's alternator... but like stated above, get one rated for at least 500W or so... are they rated by watts...? i'm sure there aren't any bators heated with more than 500W...

good luck...

This summer we lost power several times and I used the blanket trick. One time we had been out for a couple of hours and the bator was getting cold so I laid on the couch with the eggs on my stomach, under my shirt. No kidding. Only had 10 eggs though. Luckily it came back on before too long. I was getting hungry.

I am in Williams County - very NW county in Ohio. My daughter lives in West Lafayette IN and said that they have been getting ice for 2 1/2 hours now.....very miserable there. I have all my parrots moved into the main three rooms of the house with the bator. I will hopefully be able to keep the center of the house warmer if we lose power. I don't use wood burners because of the parrots - inhalents are bad for them......keeping my fingers crossed that it splits and goes around us!!! Hey, it is a good dream - right?! Do you think the hand warmers would keep a bator warm enough?

are u getting any ice yet?

We ended up gett at least a half inch of ice. I just got back inside from switching out the chickens' frozen water and giving them some treats. What snow was left on the ground is straight ice. The kind of ice that was dreamy when I was little and had a snow day!!

Thankfully, we've still got electricity. I'm on Day 4 now on these eggs in the incubator. The next round of ice is supposed to start around noon today, so we will see what happens!

Everyone else doing ok?

I have read a couple people suggest hand warmers, and some say that you have to keep the warmers moving around to keep them warm? I haven't used them in a long time, but I do have some, so we may have to use those too. I'm hoping that if we do lose power, we can make it to my parents' house safely and I can put the incubator near the gas fireplace and at least help keep the temp up. But really, I'm just hoping we keep power!!!

Well, how did it go? did you or anyone on here lose power? Are the bators ok? We in Va., well right outside of Richmond, got a little sleet for about 30 mins, but that's it. I got off work at 7 and when I went outside it was all gone. today is just slightly gray.
