Selective breeding is debatable, for a lot of reasons. But to call it torture is, frankly, a bit silly, IMHO. Animals kept for selective breeding are not typically treated badly, they are typically treated well, as any other scenario would alter the results.

As for "mutating chickens," chickens today are already a series of mutations. There are only two or three wild birds that were bred to become what we now think of as chickens. They really don't mind being bred, I promise you.

Breeders do not mutate chickens, they select for desirable or undesirable mutations. What do you perceive as the process of mutating chickens, or any other animal, for that matter?

Exactly. None of the domesticated animals we have now would exist if not for selective breeding. Nobody would have farm animals, let alone pets, if not for those pesky breeders messing with genes and cultivating breed characteristics. Scientists now are doing the same thing breeders have been doing for thousands of years, just more efficiently (because they have the knowledge of genetics, which Gregor Mendel established in the late 1800's) and with more specific goals.

If breeding "naked chickens" doesn't diminish the quality of life for the chicken (and perhaps even improves it) or the quality of its meat for the people who are consuming it, then what's the problem? There isn't one, so far as I can see. If the problem is factory farming, then go after factory farming in general-- there's plenty of fodder there before even raising the question of whether the chickens have feathers or not.

I have seen a youtube video about this. Okay so they could take the heat so much better then breeds like say oprington or cochin that have fluffy, heavily feathered bodies. But its just not right.... It just isnt a natural looking creature, Then agian we have show girl silkies, and turkens which I don't really like either. The bareness of feathers just resembles a chicken thats had all of its feathers plucked out...

Go back a thousand years or so, and show somebody a picture of a poodle. See if they don't say "It's just not right....it just isn't a natural looking creature."

Im just saying that is my opinion. I dont mean to get into an arguement about whats right or not...
But I do believe chickens are meant to have feathers/
and you bring up a very good point which made me bite my lip when I read it. lol

So it's just not right to you, because it is not a "natural looking" chicken.

Just try to define a "natural looking chicken." You will find there is no such thing, except may be jungle fowl. Orpington are no more natural chickens than Cochins, Turkens or Silkies are.

If you want to object to breeding jungle fowl for specific characteristics, fine. But do learn what you are talking about first.

stuckinthecity I think I get what you're trying to say. You're not saying that its wrong, just that it looks really weird. When I first saw it I thought it looked like they had cut off its wings. they looked so tiny and helpless without the feathers. I guess I think of the wing feathers as being like fingers for them and this poor chickie didn't have any.

I do understand how it would be helpful for meat production, but it seems like the total lack of feathers could actually make it more vunerable to the heat. To clarify why I say that, have you ever seen any movie (because we all know they are based on fact lol) where someone was in the desert naked. No, they are covered from head to toe with light material that is usually light in color to reflect the sun/heat.

You forget though...broilers are housed in a building where they are protected from the elements. No rain, no extreme cold, no extreme heat and sunlight is given from the sides of the building rather than the top. The birds are able to move away from the sunlight at any point in time.

I agree, I think it's cool looking. Looks like a supermarket chicken with a functioning head. Cut off the head and put it on the grill. Wonder if they come in different colors.
