OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I am going to try to get the vinyl siding on the new coop today. Once this rain stops as it supposed to early today.

I also have to insulate it and run the electric, and the Taj Mah Chicken will be complete.

I finally finished 'winterizing' the coop. Not using heat this year except for the heated waterer. Put up plastic sheeting on all the run areas to keep out snow, rain and wind. Left open a few small areas for ventilation. Put up the feeder chain inside the coop so I can put the feeder inside when the weather turns brutal. Added extra bedding in the coop and will add more as it gets colder. That's about all I will do this year, but will put in the heat lamp if we get below -10.

ToniTalley are you doing deep litter? I turn mine twice a week in the winter and it will heat the coop up from the composting. I add new litter only once a week to mine.

Not exactly. It's deeper than in summer but not really that deep. And I sprinkle sweet pdz on it fairly often along with adding some fresh straw and shavings. During warm spells I will clear it out and add new. This is in the coop. In the run I just have a thin layer over the sand to keep their feet warmer, lol. Hopefully the plastic will keep the snow and rain out.

I use the deep litter method in winter just to have the added heat it gives off. I add sweeter to it as well as new bedding. In warmer times I take out bedding by half so it doesn't have to restart the breakdown process. My run isn't totally closed from wind now but only from the worst of the wind. we leave the top uncovered so tree limbs and branches can be pulled off easily, and it's a huge run. There is no way to clear heavy snow off it if we covered it. I am blessed to have a husband who is half obsessed with chickens as I am. Now if I can figure out how to get him talked into making run 10 ft larger. lololol!

Hi, I live near Wellington in Lorain county. Just retired and took up raising chickens. Got my first group on June 22 and this month ( November ) they started laying and I am getting a dozen eggs in 3 days. Sometimes 2 days.
I have 9 that are laying 5 that should start soon.
I have 3 that are 9 weeks old and 20 that are 2 weeks old.
Plan on stopping around 50 and hope to sell a few dozen a week and supply family with eggs.
Around here they are getting $2.00 a dozen and happy to pay it.

I live in Akron/canton area, we sell our eggs for $4.00/doz and can hardly keep up with egg demands. I think you can charge a little higher than $2 to break even with feed expenses.
