A rooster is a male chicken over a year old and a lot of people call them roos. It's just short for rooster. Personally I don't like the term but it's no big deal.

Technically, a male under one year of age is a cockerel, a male over a year is a cock, or cock bird.

It may not be a big deal here. but I'll bet you that you will never hear a serious breeder use the term, outside of maybe among themselves when telling jokes about what some BYC type person had said. And they do.

So I thought I would just put this one out here being I'm in NE Ohio I just got a few non show quality Araucanas. They are clean faced and do have tails but came from a very reputable breeder so I am certain of the breed. My question is if I end up with a rooster would anybody want to purchase him? I only purchased them so I could add color to my eggs I didn't care if they were show quality or not but as many people go I have 10 rosters already and need another like I need a hole in my head. Lol if you would be interested please let me know

Now I am a big believer in bio security. I never wear boots that I use in my coops anywhere off the property. Always go straight in the house and change clothes(and usually shower) when coming back from a show, swap.. I don't allow most people in my coops. Those I do I request to wear clothes that have not been in their coops and step into a shallow pan of Clorox when the get out of their vehicle.  

That being said, I don't think walking between your own coops on your property is that big a risk, unless you have flocks of wild waterfowl waddling between your coops

My property is right next to 3 ponds plus two others across the road. When the migration hits we see all types of wild ducks, geese, song birds, hummingbirds and the predator birds. Snow geese in or over my yard, yup.Eagles, osprey, raccoons from Hell,fox, coyote we get a large mix. I do not let anyone in/ near my coop that has birds.(only 1 friend does, we respect the rule at each others homes)My coops are apart yet the runs are connected so the birds can reach one another.I may be jumping the gun I get that, but if the flu keeps speading I will put my 3 Cochins on lockdown and go mental trying to not cross contaminate . Been dreading it would hit this part of the country since the rest of the planet has had a turn.
Does Clorox freeze???How does one keep an idiot dog out of it?Terriers!

Yeah you might have cause to be a bit jumpy in that case.

Not sure about the freezing. I keep a jug in the mud room, pull it out when needed, which is very seldom. Nor do I bring in any new outside chickens, other than maybe few day old guinea chicks maybe every 3-4 years.

Don't believe we've ever had a dog attempt more than one drink of the Clorox, and I think the smell changed their mind before the got that close. If it's a problem you might ought to look into smarter dogs. Although probably one of the smartest dogs we have ever had was a little rat terrier female, Lizzy, a very good and serious little dog..

Just received some news from a contact who has some direct involvement with the Indiana DNR. Turns out that they have a good chance of getting this under control, the elimination efforts are going well. So far, they have not found any trace of this virus in chickens. Only turkeys. They are in the process of testing wild birds to see if they are carriers, no info regarding that yet.

Lol, she is smart but only when she wants to be. Good mouser too! I think she is part goat really. She eats/drinks dang near anything. We give her vitamins too and the vet says she should not be eating everything to make up for a nutrition deficiency. Rocks, cigarette butts, bottle caps, plastic,she is like have 5 toddlers with her eating attempts.
But yes where I live makes me worry about the flu here. I will try the bleach in the garage and let you know.

To anybody who may have a Marc's store in their area: a lot of the stores have 30 gallon metal garbage canes for $9.99. It holds a good 125 lbs of feed. And they can't be chewed by rodents. I got a couple last time they had them, the one I keep outside is still rust free and not warping from our temp fluxuations.
The Bereaved store has ALOT of them.

We keep an amount of feed, wood chips and straw in metal can right by the coop, makes it quick and easy to use when you are out there.
