OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

May I rejoin this thread? It seems to have gotten away from me somehow. :D

Welcome, Alex! I'm glad to have you on here again.
Everybody ignored my original question lol
Next question - anyone have any experience adopting rescuees? Was looking into it and found Happy Trails Farm Animal Rescue in Ravenna.

I'm sorry I missed your first question. :-( I'll have to look back over the thread and find it. As for your second question, I unfortunately do not have any experience with rescuing chickens or rescue organizations that offer them. Depending on where you live in Ohio, you might consider calling Wyandot County Humane Society. They take in all kinds of animals, including livestock.

Hi everyone. I can't ever seem to keep up on this thread. Every once in a while I get on the computer so I don't get overwhelmed. Does anyone buy their feed from the Amish? I heard that it is cheaper but haven't made my way there yet.

This might be a strange idea but I've always thought that my having 3 children was hard on them because they weren't able to pair up... someone was always the odd man out. So I'm looking at my upcoming first chickens through the same eyes. Anyone notice difficulties for one if there are 3?

I have read they go better in pairs or more if you have breeds that look different. As in you have two WL and only one RIR the WL may pick on the RIR because it looks different. I have not personally seen this.

I had six girls and decided to get more. I brought home nine more in two different batches of three different ages. They seem to stick to age groups. I think it all depends on the temperament of your chickens.

As far as rescuing I would think as long as they have been given a clean bill of health you should be fine. Getting a random chicken I would recommend quarantine. You don't want to bring a possibly sick chicken into your flock.

Hi there I got a question. Does anyone know why my chickens don't roost at night? I've got a group of older chickens (around 13 weeks old) They don't like to roost to sleep! They roost during the day to have a rest...all of the big chickens cuddle up in a corner in a big pile and some poor poor sucker on the bottom of the pile gets smashed by everybody.
My younger chicks (8 weeks old) all roost at night like they should. What's wrong here?

I've got 20 total, 16 are 12wks 4 are 9 weeks old. 1 is a roo and is a black copper marans, we've got 6 black austrolorps, 5 golden comets, 4 buff orpingtons, 3 Easter Eggers, 1 golden laced wyandotte & our male marans. This is my first flock and we are by Utica

I have a group of LF COCHIN that do not roost as well. One has a bad leg and can not roost, so they cuddle up. My 3 month olds do the same. They rather pile up and let the others roost.

Do you have roosts at varying heights? I read that while some chickens want to feel like king (errrr queen) of the mountain others are more comfortable with just enough to keep their feet off the floor. Newbie here but just a thought.

I have heard the same but haven't tried yet, I'd make sure you get the right kind (age wise). Several Amish family members do different things. One only gives scraps, another gets from Amish feed store and the third we know of only does free range. One family upped the eggs last 2 yrs due to increase in feed prices.
I'd check hatchery (depending where you are at). I've only had to get 2 bags medicated and 3 bags non-medicated so far. Heck 50lb was 11.42 which doesn't seem bad to me. That was at Meyer..dang it now I think I should keep better track of this stuff lmbo.
