OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I woke to 1/2" snow on the ground gone now thank God! I had to bring my ducklings in the house it got so cold up here in Ashtabula, Ohio. I grabbed the brooder box and all. I like keeping an eye on them. ❤️
Yeah I've been trying to get my meat chickens (just over 3 weeks old) out into the chicken tractor but it's been too dang cold! I think after tomorrow though it will be a little better. I hope! These guys are getting huge and have outgrown the brooder.

They grow fast! it would be good for them to get out in the tractor. Wish you well on that one.

Thanks! I decided am gonna put them out tomorrow morning once the temps go above freezing. The rest of the week will be cool but not as bad as the past few days, according to the forecast. I hope they're right!

I saw parents to a little boy on my bus route have a large dog kennel and attached a brooding light to the side of the big dog house they have for them. They have lots of ducklings and chicks which are fully feathered though and the light is half outside of the house and half inside. I don't know if the light will break or what if it should happen to rain. I don't know if you could do something like that or not. It will get colder here this weekend with snow flurries. I am 18 miles East of Columbus, Ohio. Good luck with your babies.

It's hard for folks ordering chicks and ducks through the USPS. One day it's 85 F the next 35. a person can't blame the postal service for the weather, it's crazy. I ordered some pearl Guinea Keets from TSC. They were the cheapest place I could find 10 keets for $78.00 including shipping now that a great deal. They are supposed to be shipped next week. :fl

You are so right. The weather here is so unpredictable. I ordered my two Mallard Ducklings from Metzer in California 2 years ago in June and they got here just fine. I was out for the summer so I could go to the Post Office at 6am when they called me to get them right away. They have been my best layers, the one laying almost all through are crazy mild winter this year. I hope that your Keets arrive good for you.

Thank you! Some mallards are great layers, and it sounds like you have some. My wife had some that laid all but a few days of the year.

You are most welcome. The only thing that Metzer did not do was pinion them. I wanted them to be flightless so I could not lose them but I clip the one wing and the one only flew away once but was returned by a kind neighbor.

Good morning folks. Good morning @Luv Ducks and @HenriettaPizzaNolan! Years ago, I used to have many kinds of wild ducks and the first thing I learned was how to pinion the chicks. I had a bad experience. A person that sold some wood ducks and shipped them to me pinioned as adults! the day he shipped them to me. I picked them up from Cleveland airport and when I opened the box the whole inside of the box was blood covered! they had been jumping around and busted the pinion wing tips open it was truly a mess poor babies. they eventually healed up and were fine, but I would never let that happen again. So, I learned to pinion them when they are in or around five days old. The ducklings don't seem to notice and if it starts bleeding you can put some form of clotting powder on that area.
