OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

It was snowing here now with a rain mix. The ducklings are back in the house. :jumpy
What type do you have, I forgot. We had sleet earlier today but Momma duck is still sitting tight. My white eggs in the house were not fertile so they got pitched out of the incubator. I suspect the white ones she is sitting on are not fertile either so maybe there will only be 6 ducklings if any hatch which will be good. I am possibly going to look at some Runner Ducks this weekend if they hatch out in Lancaster which is not too far from me.

I saw parents to a little boy on my bus route have a large dog kennel and attached a brooding light to the side of the big dog house they have for them. They have lots of ducklings and chicks which are fully feathered though and the light is half outside of the house and half inside. I don't know if the light will break or what if it should happen to rain. I don't know if you could do something like that or not. It will get colder here this weekend with snow flurries. I am 18 miles East of Columbus, Ohio. Good luck with your babies.
I have my growouts in a coop with a heatlamp. I ran out of room inside and needed my smaller brooders. They've been out there a couple weeks and it's been super nice. They started roosting right away! They have more space and will know that is home. I'm hoping it'll help since when I normally put them out I always have to go out every night for a couple weeks to put them all up.

It sounds like your setup is really nice. I just wish the one on my route would have had at least some shade for the birds this past week as it did not and it got into the 80's. The father of the boy told me that they usually all die, I wonder why??? No shade and who knows how much water would be enough to kill any birds. Hopefully this group he got makes it. Some at least were still alive so I hope that the weather being cooler this week will at least help them.

No shade? 😱 poor things. My blue coop is a old kids playhouse we redid as a coop. The birds can get under to dust bathe or get shade. I need to redo the top of the run and sides. I think there is 18 chicks in it? They turn 6 week this week so hopefully I can start sexing them soon.

I have mallards. I had runners as a child and loved them, but that was 60 years ago. Susie my wife had a large flock of ducks in the 80's. IMG_20230101_094648219_BURST000_COVER (1).jpg

Do you have any problems catching the Mallards after they are born so you can pinion them or do you pinion them? I have not done any of my Mallards in the past and the people I have sold them to have had them fly off sometimes but they didn't seem to mind.

I have bought pet gazebo's for my ducks and put tarps around it to keep it weather proof. That is where my Momma Duck Sugar is sitting on eggs as I type this. Her Sister Spice (they are Mallards) also hatched out a clutch in there last year. They really like it. I also bought another bigger Pet Container that you can walk in and put tarps over it in the pen and the other ducks sometimes will lay their eggs in it. They have a regular Duck house that they use, a Dog house and a Chicken House that have been given to me in the past. Mine have plenty of places to hide and lay eggs and lots of shade. I hate it when People just put them in a dog kennel with a dog house and lots of them with no shade. I don't know what they are thinking when it gets hot outside. I had gotten a Child's playhouse once for my Duck pen but my Grandchildren saw it and took it from me, lol.
