Hi! From Sidney here. We've only been at it since October but we're now up to 11 adults and 12 new chicks! I'll be as much help as I can be tho. Love to talk chickens! Welcome to the Forum. You'll find lots of great information and helpful people here.

My husband and I went to rural king last night and brought home 8 assorted chicks! Forgot I ever said we were sticking to a small flock lol
Ha! Love it! Guess I am off the hook for the cake now! LOL

Don't feel bad. I wasn't going to do chicks this year and we got 12 this weekend and added 3 different breeds to our "program."

Program = Lisa coming up with some professional sounding yet complete BS story in order to get some more chickens.

I'm in Morrow, Ohio close to Blanchester and Clarksville.

I have nice Cuckoo Marans, 2 Jersey Giants (1 black-1blue) with a copper blue marans rooster (still in question about if that is what it really is or not) , and Light Brahmas.

Nice to meet all of you Buckeyes!
Welcome to the Forum! I have family in Morrow. Really pretty down there. Nice to meet you as well!

So sad I was in TSC to get a water dish for chicks.
A little girl was all excited her class at school had hatched chickens and the teacher was giving her one chick. Her dad bought a 50# bag of chick feed. I wanted to tell her dad that most likely one chick would not survive all alone. The chicken "experts " at TSC never said a word. My hubby told me to stay out of it. So I did. I blame the teacher for not educating herself about chickens!

Visited this page last year when I received my first ever order of chicks.

This year two of my tetra tints are broody & I am trying my hand at hatching eggs. I put 8 eggs under one broody last night.

I welcome any helpful suggestions.

Near Troy.

Thanks

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

I hatch under broodies all the time (and exclusively). The big thing to know is you have to isolate your broody so your other hens can't get to her nest. If she gets off to eat and another one hops on, the broody will find someplace else to sit and stay there and you'll lose your eggs. I used a dog crate in the coop the first time and it worked fine, but I now have a special coop attached to a dog kennel that I call my broody suite--it's way overkill!

I have Orps and a Jersey Giant that go broody and they are excellent moms. I set them up and leave them alone. Once the chicks are hatched and the mom is off the nest let them out and the mom will integrate the babies into the flock. It is SO much easier then doing the brooding yourself!

Good luck!

Kirsten

Nice to meet you too. We moved to Morrow late last summer, so I'm just getting things in working order around here. It is beautiful, I call my place "Wild Heaven"..and for good reason.

I'm putting more eggs in the lockdown incubator today! And 2 dozen more into the turning incubator....Life is good!
