Hello fellow buckeyes!!!
I live in Jackson County =] I am wondering If people heat up either coops in winter or do they just make sure it is insulated and let their body heat keep them warm?

No need to heat a coop if it is secure from winds/drafts (but you still need decent ventilation so the ammonia fumes don't build up). Insulation is nice, but again, not necessary. My chickens have done just fine the last 5 years, year round without any additional heat source--food, fresh water and protection from weather and wind. That's once they are fully feathered...not young chicks!

Last question I promise lol. Why do your chickens look like when you put them out in the coop. Cause I have no idea how old they are, so it's hard for me to judge when to put them out in a coop. And what time you let them range.

We live in the country with lots of hawks, therefore my chickens only free range inthe late afternoon. I let them out & sit with them at dusk they go back in the coop and I lock the coop door. I am on my way out now its 6:30 here with a windchill of 22.....wish me luck....crazy fir my chickens!!

Had a hen rip off one of her nails today. She was fine this morning and missing a nail and bleeding this afternoon. Not sure how she did it. I couldn't find anything unusual in the coop or run. Thankfully after a search on here I was able to get it to stop bleeding. She seems fine now, not holding that foot up at all. She got down and ate and drank as soon as I was finished with her. Thankful since she's one of my favorites.

After reading the boards for a while and finishing our coop, we finally have our chicks! I bought 12 "assumed" pullets, lol, from TSC last week. All are doing well. They were 3-5 days old according to the guy that helped us. Supposedly he has raised chickens all his life, but I didn't have time to pick his brain with 2 little ones wanting to hurry and get the girls home lol.

I am in need of a coop for my 6 Delaware chicks. My husband and I both like to build, but with 3 kids and him in Afghanistan...I don't think I will be able to. Everywhere I find around that sells coops are asking $500+ for small cheaply built coops. Anyone know of someone around the Dayton/ Xenia/ beavercreek area that can build a coop for a reasonable price or am I stuck building it solo?
