Thanks, I have some Easter egger (Araucanian?) and Black Jersey Giants. I have had them 1 week and they are hilarious to watch. I am looking to get a Road Island Red, maybe a leg horn and some Australorp. Not really sure just nothing exotic and no roosters at this juncture. I think I will head over to TSC and see what they have and get another 6 from them. 12 seems like alot but a freind told me to get atleast 25. Maybe later.

One of my Eggers looked just like that one facing forward in the center right... she's in my avatar.. has a great beard now! Love my Eggers... I only have 2 but one lays light blue eggs and other one lays light green. Good luck with them!

Thanks for the warm welcome! Last night was the first night my ladies spent in their coop. I sure hope they enjoyed it!!

So I picked up 5 more pullets... found someone in Lancaster who had a few 10mo. old pullets to spare... so now we are up to 15... and the eggs are really coming in. The new gals came on Friday and we've only had a few scuffles. One has even made it to the most coveted top roost! LOL

COLUMBUS, OH GAL DESPERATE FOR FEATHER FOOTED BANTAMS / WHO KNOWS ABOUT WEASELS???????????
(going to LOGAN, OH this weekend if anyone out there have some birdies for me...)

I have had a horrific experience the past 2 days: something actually managed to get in my 'Fort Knox' chicken pen (the chicken wire is buried 6" - it is covered w/ chicken wire, etc. - NO holes or entry areas to speak of) - anyhoo - it massacred 5 of my favorite banties: a Sultan, Frizzle, 2 Mille Fleurs AND a Polish. The 1st morning when I let everyone out, I noticed 3 of the 5 that perished were missing (yet, oddly, there was NO sign of them via feathers, blood, etc,,.); I distinctly recalled having seen them the nt before, but, I figured perhaps I had not. SO, LAST NIGHT, after closing everyone in; i heard a blood-curdling ruckus around midnt, ran out to the pen, beam lt in hand, and there was (my ABSOLUTE favorite) broody Frizzle running around the pen w/ a bloody, de-feathered head; it was AWFUL (I'm sure u can guess what remained of the precious 3/4 -of-the-way developed eggs...). I could NOT for the life of me figure out WHAT could have done something so horrendous; went online and, of all things, 'everyone' was convinced it was a WEASEL?! I did not know weasels were indigenous to Ohio?

ive actually heard a similar story in ohio but they figured it was a mink .. but the mink took the chickens through the fence and there was feathers and other things left behind on the fence..

I had this happen in my old coop also. We had 19 babies in it and something got in and bit every one of their heads off. It was horrible. It came back to finish off our poor duck that had survived the first attack. From what everyone told me it was weasel because it didn't eat them it just killed them all. I actually took a year off from raising chickens because it was so heart breaking.

I am sorry for your loss. I know how bad it feels to loose your babies.

I live in Cincinnati and will be starting this grand chicken raising adventure this summer. Any tips, tricks, advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated!

I have very little farming experience, but I am in the process of buying a house with a nice backyard, and have dreamed of raising chickens for a long time.

So far, I have decided to get a few Barred Rock pullets, and either convert the Pre-existing metal shed into a coop/shed combo, or build a new coop (I have a degree in sculpture...this could get interesting).

welcome Emily!! I am rather new to the group, great people here.
I just started with chickens a year ago last April, am totally addicted!
I started with the book " A Chicken In Every Backyard" you can find it on Amazon.
Grew up in Kettering a total city girl now living on the country.
My one word of advice is to build your coop & run like Ft. Knox, well with the time & money, fire the peace if mind each night.
Ordered my first chicks from Mt Healthy Hatchery there in Cincy.

Welcome Emily. It's nice to have another person around the Cincinnati area. My advice would be not to give up. I started 4 years ago with my first 4 chicks. That summer 2 didn't make it. The next year we built a new coop and added 19 more. A predator got all 19. Make sure you make every nook and cranny so nothing can get into your coop. We got down to 1 chick for awhile. Until this year. I have been adding them like crazy. remember chicken math. You set a limit but always seem to go over it. I would suggest making your coop bigger than what you plan.

I also recommend handling your chicks on a daily basis. This helps with calmer adults. We didn't with our first 2 and they were the meanest things there ever was. All of our new ones are handled daily and are so much sweeter.
