OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

I am not far from you! I am in Mount Orab (30 mins from cincinnati) Are you talking about local swaps?? You will want cash with you and it depends what you are going after. If you go are going after chicks a lot of times around here they are $5-6 each but are straight run. If you are wanting older chickens that are laying many can be $10-15 depending where you get them, who you get them from. One thing I have learned from going to ones around here are, before you get them look at the legs and make sure they don't have mites. I hear that ceasar creek does it two saturdays in a month, forget which days though sorry I can't help you on that one until later. You would want to go early though. I will keep my ear out, sometimes you can even find a few on craigs list. If you are going after certain breed that would help to.
I really need to mark my chicks up

on swaps its a little different. people will have their birds in booths, just like flea markets. you buy, sell, trade to get what you want. most people at swaps have decent knowledge of their birds, and are usually willing to answer your questions. you will pay a little more at swaps, but you can look the bird over much better. take hand sanitizer with you and use it often. look for the same things. pay attention to the weight of birds too, a sickly bird will be lighter. but a bird in molt will be lighter too.
I usually attend the Lucasville swap, if you can find me there; ill do what I can to help.

where is everyone? I feel so alone

. I would love to find a good trio of blue laced red Wyandottes. but I cant do much good with just a rooster. Happy 4th, everyone!
Happy 4th. It finally stopped raining here. Not much fun unless you are one of my layers that insist on playing in the rain. I've been stalking a site I bid on for some started project chocolate silkies.as well as looking for some other eggs. I plan on filling up the incubator again next week as well as getting my ccls. Hehehe. This round is looking to be the projects, isbars, and silkies. I really need to find some good black silkies pullets.

Can anyone explain to me the auctions and animal swaps I keep reading about. I live just a little out if Cincinnati and would like to go to one of these, but need to know when/where they are and what to expect. Do I bring cash? How much should I bring. I'm looking to start a small flock of 10 or less hens only. Thank you!

The ceazars creek swap is every second Sunday. It starts at 8 am. I've been once. Saw some silkies but I was there later in the afternoon. People were packing up when I got there. I'm thinking of going back there next Sunday with my extra chicks. It is cash only and how much you bring depends on what you want. What kind of hens are you looking for?

Thank you so much! I would love to get a couple of Silkies just for fun, but overall I want some good layers that would be good with kids too. I was thinking a Silver Laced Wynadotte, Chocolate and Lavendar Orpingtons, and an Amercauna. I have the following chicks arriving soon: Golden Buff, Buff Orpington, Australorp, Light Brahma and an Easter Egger. Of course, the more and more I read about other breeds, the longer my list is getting. I think my hubby is going to cap me at 10 or less though. LOL

They are addicting. So Welcome Aboard! lol My DH brought home 4 Golden Comets and now we are up to 46 lol I have only 6 that are laying right now, 6 that should be soon. 1 month old chicks, 2 week old chicks and hopefully some on the 21st.

So far out of all ours, the Easter Eggers are the most socialable and fun! They jump over the fence and follow you around. They let the kids pet them too.

Haha. Mine tried, or tries. I ignore and carry on. Making excuses or little white lies works well. My cap was 25 and right now I'm up to probably 50 with all of my chicks. Not to mention the 10 new ones coming next week and the eggs I am planning on ordering. But I am planning to thin down. Especially my little mitt chicks i started with. I have all the layers I want, except a choc egg layer. The rest are for breeding and all more rare breeds.

The list just keeps getting longer and longer. Lol I finally cut mine down a lot and only have 4 more I need. Well, for now. ;)

Lol out of all of mine I have 1 laying. Hopefully 3 more start soon. Those will all be little bantam eggs. My large fowl who are almost laying age always jump the fence and free range all day.:p hopefully I can figure out when they start laying. :/
