OHio ~ Come on Buckeyes, let me know your out there!

Eaton Ohio TSC is having a small animal swap on Saturday July 13th. Hopefully they'll have a decent turn out. Eaton is in Preble county Rt 127.
Good to know! That is not horribly far from us (western Shelby Co.). I have some that need to go (to make room for different breeds) and have plans to go to the DeGraff Auction on Saturday but with 2 kids, my schedule is not always my own! Thanks!

Anyone raise BLRW? out of the 7 that hatched, I have 6 roos. Anyone need a good BLRW roo? 12weeks old. Can get done pics tomorrow. Have blue laced and black laced.

I would love to find a good trio of blue laced red Wyandottes. but I cant do much good with just a rooster.

Happy 4th, everyone!

I have heard of that farm, never been there. i'll have to check them out. there are so many more breeds that I want, I better start building another barn. my wife and I have talked about adding to the front of our barn, and we've talked about clearing land and building another one on the hill behind us.

Ok maybe I am a little chicken obsessed.

Can anyone explain to me the auctions and animal swaps I keep reading about. I live just a little out if Cincinnati and would like to go to one of these, but need to know when/where they are and what to expect. Do I bring cash? How much should I bring. I'm looking to start a small flock of 10 or less hens only. Thank you!

I am not far from you! I am in Mount Orab (30 mins from cincinnati) Are you talking about local swaps?? You will want cash with you and it depends what you are going after. If you go are going after chicks a lot of times around here they are $5-6 each but are straight run. If you are wanting older chickens that are laying many can be $10-15 depending where you get them, who you get them from. One thing I have learned from going to ones around here are, before you get them look at the legs and make sure they don't have mites. I hear that ceasar creek does it two saturdays in a month, forget which days though sorry I can't help you on that one until later. You would want to go early though. I will keep my ear out, sometimes you can even find a few on craigs list. If you are going after certain breed that would help to.

on auctions you have to look at the birds fast. look for swollen eyes and wattles, check the legs for mites. if you can handle the bird look for mucus under the wings and around its vent for gleet and/or mites. auctions scare me the most because its hard to look the stock over a lot of times. every bird in that auction is there for a reason. there are a few people who raise them just to sell at auctions, hoping to make a little. then you have the guy who has some sick birds and no place to quarantine them. then you have the ones that are hens that are to old to lay, and unfertile roosters.

the basics of attending an auction are, you sign in and get your number. the auctioneer will announce what exactly is for sale. it can be single birds, pairs, trios and pens, some are cage included some aren't. he will also announce if the auction is per bird, or for the group. for the group (sometimes called "one money") the price he is saying is the price he is trying to get. and what you bid is what you pay.
if the auction is per bird, you multiply the number of birds by the bid. for instance if your bidding on 4 birds, and the bid is for $5 the price you will pay is $20. depending on breeds and where the auction is, ive seen sickly looking birds go for $1 and healthy rare breeds bring $50 and more.

if your selling birds at an auction, there is an auctioneer's fee. its a percentage of the total sale price, normally around 20%. so if you sell a bird for $10, the auctioneer's fee is $2. your cut of it is $8.

if you have any questions now is the time to ask. LOL
